Description of multiple English subtitles

Many times there are multiple English subtitle tracks to choose from. Sometimes it's impossible to tell any difference between them by playing short snippets or jumping from track to track.

Is there any general source that actually describes what each subtitle track is beyond stating what language it's in?

If that info is dependent on the title of the movie, I'm interested in:
Lord of the Rings Extended - all three movies
Star Wars - all six
Bourne Trilogy

Some subtitle tracks are made with extra detail inserted for deaf or hearing impaired individuals. These are tracks that have stuff like "[car horn honking]" and "[door slams shut]" added into the track so that those who can't hear any audio at all can still understand what is happening on screen.

Other tracks have only spoken dialogue show up on screen in written text format.

Yup.

1) English (only the dialogue is subbed)

2) English SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, what Petra_Kalbrain described)

3) subtitles for audio commentaries

4) In some cases, text that was overlaid on the movie itself (such as the name of a city in spy movies that visit many countries) during its theatrical release is removed and appears via a subtitle stream instead.

As well as translations of foreign or alien/different species languages (for Star Wars and LOTR).

The Lord of the Rings has 4 additional subtitle tracks for the commentaries (or at least the DVD's have). So you'll have tracks for the director, writers, cast and crew.

Some subtitle tracks will just highlight the name of the person doing the commentary. So you may have a lull in on-screen information if they talk long enough!

Usually if you press the pop-up menu button on your remote and go to the audio/subtitle menu it should give you all the information you need.
