Just finished zero year. I'm wondering if long arcs introducing new/reimagined villians is going to become the norm in the Batman series. The
Joker and now the Riddler got substantial arcs over the past two years.

Agreed. Amazing that the twist hadn't been spoiled in advance. I do think I'm gonna try to hold off reading the rest of Endgame until it's done though, which should be by issue 40. Since it takes place after Batman Eternal, it kind of makes sense to finish off that story first anyway. But yeah, like you said, great stuff!

anyone else ready for "Batman: Eternal" to just end already. while its had its good points, dragging this series 52 issues wasnt one of them. its been extended to the point where i was indifferent to the big "reveal" in issue 50, if it even was one. with so many reveals and red herrings about the mastermind behind it all it this series should have been called "Batman: What a Twist!"

What a twist! - YouTube
I read the first 10 issues and just couldn't get into it. I thought it would be interesting/fun to have a Batman weekly, but nothing in the opening issues grabbed my attention.

Also, I never even tried Future's End. I wasn't familiar enough with the characters or setting. I would love to get a weekly that I could really get into, but that hasn't happened yet.

Just read the spoiler about who is in the new Batman-mecha suit come June, and I was really surprised...
HEAVY SPOILER!
[Show spoiler]It's Jim Gordon

My spoiler-filled thoughts on it...
[Show spoiler]Unlike other iterations of Gordon, the comic version is really bad-ass. Where he's still sympathetic, he also has that hard edge that is missing from for example the Gotham tv show and the Nolan films, and short of anyone in the bat-family giving up their persona for the cowl again, Gordon is the one most familiar with the Batman and understands its significane as being more a symbol than a lone man, that it is a legacy to be carried on. Hell, Batman Eternal's last issue even has Gordon saying how everyone in Gotham needs to be Batman right now, and how he saved the city and always will.
The big question I have now is... whatever happened to Bruce Wayne?

It really is. its the kind of comic book ending you dont think youll ever get and takes you by surprise when you read it. if their was any doubt about the Snyder/Capullo run being one of the best in the history of batman, its gone now.

Finally got around to Endgame. God damn, like beatnikslacker said, this firmly cements Synder and Capullo's run as one of the all time greats. Capullo always kills it, but that man drew his ass off on #40

Finally got my copy in the mail. I really enjoyed this story arc, along with pretty much everything since they relaunched the title in 2011. My plan is to start buying the trades so I can re-read all of the new 52 stories.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the Batman title now that Convergence is finished.

For origin stories, you can't go wrong with Frank Miller's classic
Batman: Year One
and the most recent take, by Scott Snyder is also excellent, and collected in two volumes.
Batman #4: Zero Year - Secret City
Batman #5: Zero Year - Dark City
There's also the great alternate universe version in DC's new Earth One-line which conists of original graphic novels with new interpretations of the characters.
Batman: Earth One #1
and the second volume was just released (and keep in mind that this is outside of the regular comic's cannon)
Then of course there have been a lot of classic storylines through the years. The arguably best Joker tale of all time is Alan Moore's
Batman: The Killing Joke
You then have the two event series by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale that deptict Batman's early days soon after Year One...
Batman: The Long Halloween
which is followed by
Batman: Dark Victory
Loeb came back to this format later and teamed up with Jim Lee for the modern classic
Batman: Hush
and there's a lot more, but that's a start at least. I'm sure you'll get more tips down the line here, or maybe I'll just contribute some more at a later date.
