Are the discs protected fairly well from being scratched when you remove them? Is there any type of material underneath to keep it free from this happening?

there's cardboard underneath them. I don't think scratching is going to be any big issue with this set unless you intend on shaking a lot

in terms of how they sit inside the disc holders its the same as the Deadwood set. but the package is fold out.

I just received my Complete Series from Amazon and after giving it a shake, there's definately something loose inside the package. Is this normal with this set - cards and or inserts etc., or is it possible that discs have worked themselves loose?

Just in my opinion but I think the US version looks better packaging wise than the UK version. The UK amarays don't look as good as US ones either.
