Default Dynamic Range Compresion setting on or off?

Just want to get a general consensus of having to turn dynamic range compression on or off and why. Thanks.

Off. You want to hear all the dynamics of the soundtrack.

In your Denon AVR-4310CI receiver you have Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume.
Use them in tandem with Audyssey MultEQ XT if you are listening to movies below the "Reference" volume level, which is usually all the time.

* The D. Comp. or DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) should always be turn OFF!

Great receiver by the way!

Sorry guys for not completely writing down the sentence but you guys picked it up. Left out the "range" in my sentence.

LOTR, I kind of got confused with the dynamic volume and dynamic range compression and had my receiver set to on for my dynamic range setting. I'm still learning how to get the full advantage of my receiver. Thanks LOTR and blujacket.

Dynamic Range Compression in your Denon receiver only works with Dolby Digital and its variables (DD, DD+, and Dolby TrueHD). ...And not DTS and its various flavours.

Now, because your receiver has the much more advanced Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Audyssey Dynamic Volume (that work for both DD & DTS various flavors), they are the ones you want to use.

Big Daddy has a very informative sticky thread now in this section here of the Forum. And that tells you exactly what those are doing in your system.

Here's three quick links from that sticky thread:

Dynamic Range Compression reduces the volume of the loud parts and boosts the volume of the quiet parts, both of which tend to emphasize dialog over sound effects and music. It is a handy tool for listening at low volumes when dialog can get buried under effects audio. But, most people prefer hearing the full dynamic range of a soundtrack when listening at normal volumes. DRC usually only works with Dolby tracks, although receivers and players may have a Night Mode setting that does the same thing with DTS and PCM sources as well.

I always forget about that Night Mode. Or also called Late Night, and other names as well, like Midnight Mode.

And you're right, it also works with DD, DTS & Multichannel PCM audio soundtracks.

But Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume are much more efficient with their sophisticated algorithms.

On, because I hate when movies are mastered with quiet dialogue and super-loud explosions.
