I use HTPC because region free. I'm not gonna be stopped by some BDA nazis enforcing region coding on players

Unfortunately, when using a PC to play blu-ray, you're at the whim of the software developers and there's only a handful of them - PoweDVD for example, you can't just download free updates forever - they actually force you to buy a new version of their player so you can keep playing newer discs! It's like having to buy a new player every year! That shouldn't even be legal!

I learned this the hard way when the PowerDVD 8 I used to use just flat out refused to play Kino's Moroder Metropolis disc and just kept whining about needing an update despite downloading one each time. Worse still, the simple tray app that I used to reset the region counter doesn't work on newer versions of PowerDVD.

****ing bastards.

EDIT: And yes, I have tried AnyDVD HD too - problem is, since it decodes the signal in real time, it's very resource heavy and my Criterions are practically unwatchable with it. Something like the tray app I mentioned would be perfect but like I said, the only one I know doesn't work anymore...

This is the very reason I gave up with a HTPC and went back to a dedicated hardware player.
