Except that in this case, most of the people posting on any site have not yet seen the film in question. And this bashing of films before they're even seen or after they're seen, but by people with an agenda and not by those with a fair, intellectual critique of a film backed up by analysis and a knowledge of literature, drama, history and film is helping to kill an industry because too many films can't make a profit under this scenario.

Even Amazon is filled with reviews from people who bash something before it's even released. While a few people do indeed get pre-publication versions of a book or music release or see an advanced preview of a film, the very vast majority don't.

Back around 1998, I was involved with the development of a major e-commerce media site that was going to launch in many countries around the world. We didn't wind up launching in the U.S. (although it did launch elsewhere), but for the U.S. site, we had decided upon a strategy that we would not let the general public rate the media. Instead, we were building a team of reviewers who we hoped users of the site would come to know.

My opinion then and my opinion now is that a review from the average person who you don't know is absolutely useless 95% of the time because if you don't know that person's taste and intellect, you can't evaluate the validity of their review.

There's an article in the NY Times today about Nolan visiting movie theaters in New York City to prepare for the opening of "Interstellar".

The article mentions that Nolan makes very little use of surrounds. It also sounds like he wants it "LOUD":

Quote:
The most important thing, he said, was the volume; he wanted a lot of simple power, and all of it coming right out of the screen. He didn’t put a lot of surround in the mix, because he didn’t want a lot of distraction from the sides. (Outer space, he pointed out dryly, is not known for its ambient murmurs.) He seemed content. This was not, he told me later, a chore. It seemed as if, had he enough time, he’d be more than happy to check out every seat in every theater in the country.
This had always seemed like a film that would have been appropriate for Dolby Atmos or other immersive formats. But if there's little in the surrounds even in 5.1, I understand why they didn't bother.

Probably should stand by for some incoming Atmos rage anyway.

Nolan's films have never really stood out as surround extravaganzas anyway. He loves his bass, yes, and I can't play Batman Begins without having someone moaning at me to turn it down (seriously, it happens every time during the Tumbler rooftop chase) but I won't be whinging if my ears aren't being assaulted from all directions. I'll be too busy drinking in all that 15/70 goodness with my eyes...

With the explosions of the two space vehicles maybe aliens are afraid of Interstellar coming true and they taking steps now to insure we keep our asses in our own solar system.

I blame Mission to Mars. Maybe they finally got access to it on Alpha Centari.
