Sorry about that, but your post is too funny, but in now way in a mean way, just refreshing from the specs people just dish out. The ceiling in a room of that size is interesting and am sure it has a unique signature on sound.

To that effect, is there a reason you got a Sony instead of other Brands? With features like Audyssey XT32 and SUB EQ? Just curious as unfortunately the once very prestigious ES moniker lost a lot of it's shine.

Coming back to CDs and SACDs you can sometimes find a used 971 or 980 OPPO DVD player for a very decent price and they are top notch players.

For CDs since your PC is right there you can use it and feed it to an outboard DAC or even many really good audio cards or HDMI video cards at very interesting prices.

The ceiling is a modified vault (eight feet up, all 4 sides begin to close at about a 45 degree angle until suddenly flattening, adding 2 to 2.5 feet of ceiling height - kinda like the base of a step pyramid). All walls are "covered" with shelves, drapes or carpet. When at the computer (almost always, even when music or movies are on), I sit at a two-"story" table/desk against one wall. My AOC LCD computer monitor sits on a raised shelf just to my left - about 2.5 feet away from my eyes. Just further to my left, on a 30" wide, 16" deep, 5 ft high shelf sits what's left of my players and my LG LED LCD TV (about 4 ft, 9 inches away).

Sitting on top of the corner TV/equipment shelf (directly above the TV), sits the "center" NHT VS-2a speaker, about 6 feet off the ground, angled slightly down. To the L & R of that, approx. 7.5 ft. off the ground, mounted on the "vaults" and angled down, are the L Front & R Front NHT "SuperOne Xu" surround speakers. In the opposite corner, similarly arranged, are the L & R Rear NHT surrounds. About 8 ft behind me as I sit at the computer (and this is why I use the A & B setup), are two 3.2 ft high Infinity speakers on either side of my Kurzweil keyboard. They sit on stands about 6 inches off the ground, slightly tilted up and double as speakers for the keyboard when needed. For movies, I can slide my chair into the center of the room - or 2-3 chairs can be placed in the center. The floor is carpeted, as is most of the desk wall ("front") and keyboard wall (back). The carpeting and drapes cut down on sound reflection (necessary for recording).

I don't know if that's what you were looking for, so ... pardon if ... I packed away all of the equipment I wasn't really using (turntable, etc. can be plugged into the front of the amp in a pinch). All I'm running currently are my ancient Sony DA333ES amp (the new DA4600ES is here and awaits to be unboxed - pending a decision on what and how things will be hooked up), my cable provider's Samsung VTR and my Samsung BD-D5700 Blu-ray player (also awaiting a replacement decision).

If it helps, here's a rough, totally unscaled room diagram.

Well, that's about it. No doubt, I listed tons of rubbish you couldn't care less about and left out critical info. If so, please clarify me and I'll provide a more focused update.

P.S. I plan on calling Oppo again in the morning to learn what I can about exactly what I would and would not lose hooking up with HDMI vs. analog. Alas, I don't know if they'll be open on Christmas Eve.

Okay, one thing that must've escaped our conversation : this unit will never be hooked up to the internet. No offense to anyone, but I couldn't give a rat's ass about streaming anything unless I'm going swimming. I want hard copies of my own. Besides, that's what I've got a computer for. Internet radio would be nice to hear new things, but I've got multiple "free" (already paid for) channels from my TV provider and never listen to any of them (to say nothing about more CDs, DVDs & Blu-rays than I'll ever live long enough to exhaust enjoying).

The computer is out. I play shooters (where the hell is Half-Life 3!?) & strategy games, Civ V, for example, wide open which draws every ounce of juice my computer can muster. To further burden my chipset playing movies and music while my player just sits there, well ... I don't even record live music on my computer. I've got a separate little Zoom unit for that. Computer sound is provided by my motherboard (optical out), so this time around - no sound card (and even if I could spare the juice, and I can't, a really good one would cost almost as much as an Oppo or at least a Sony).

The Sony Saga, or should I say, the Pioneer Saga. It is definitely time to replace my 13 year-old 333ES. I began looking into the Pioneer Elite VSX53 ($597 + tax locally). As I studied up and talked to dealers and Pioneer tech geeks, I became sold on the SC-61 (much better chipset/s). It was their lowest priced new Elite, and really, beyond me. But it looked purdy and would do a solid job with my discs (again, all I wanted). Anyway, I found one on the web out of New Jersey - $729, no tax, no shipping. I was just about to pull the trigger when I found out (rather rudely from Pioneer) that no Elites purchased online would get any warranty protection at all (their attitude was buy from an authorized, walk-in B&M or f*ck off). Well, as I was already way beyond budgetary reality, the extra $300-350 to buy one locally was a fatal kick in the privates.

As it turned out, my 16 inch deep shelves couldn't have handled the 17" deep SC-61 anyway. There's just zero extra room here, that's why I couldn't get an HD TV until they started making small enough ones to fit in that damn shelf. I just kept baking myself with an old 900 lb. Sony cathode ray cancer machine. Anyway, because I've taken away all the other shelves that used to hold VCRs, cassette decks, turntables, CD recorders and the like - I only have room for 3 machines : amp/receiver, VTR & Blu-ray/DVD/CD player. And, back to the Sony, a local dealer I've done business with since last century gave me a great deal on the DA1460ES ($500 with the full 5-year warranty). I only found one a bit cheaper on eBay, but again, Sony - like Pioneer - no web warranty. So, I did my homework and read every review I could find. It's defiantly an upgrade from my old Sony, which is still working 13 years on. And if it dies in half that time, hopefully - if I'm still alive - I'll be able to afford something even better (although it'll probably still have to fit on those damn 16" shelves).

So it's got to be a Blu-ray player and I've got three possibilities that I know of:

1) Keep the Samsung, which seems good on PQ (although it's the only BD player I've ever owned, so ...). However, certainly not so hot playing music.
2) Go with the Sony BDP-S790, which would cost me around $215-$230 total (and would apparently be a step up from the Samsung, if only for the better upscaling & SACD playing).
3) Rob a bank to pay for the Oppo 103 ($517) - worth the crushing stretch IF I don't lose its advantages via HDMI (will it still play SACD, HDCDs, etc?). It should show BDs (?) and upscale my non-Blu DVDs a bit better (including many music DVDs which may never get to Blu).

So, that's where my questions came in. I really hope I get some answers from Oppo tomorrow. I only have one more day to decide.

Update : Oppo is closed for the holidays ...

Folks, I am not sure if this is right place to post this question. But my question is somewhat similar and to do with the 3D Blu ray player and so thought of posting this question here. Moderators if this is not the right place please move my question to the right forum or point me to that forum. Thank you.

Here's my question:

I have a Denon AVR3310CI 7.1-Channel 1.3a receiver which is not a 3d Receiver. But I do have a LG 3D TV. Can I use this Panasonic DMP-BDT-500 to connect to my receiver as well as to my 3D TV for playing 3D movies? I know DMP-BDT-310 can do this. But can we achieve the same results with this blu ray player as well? Also which one is better? 310 or 500? I am not seeing much of 310 anymore. Is there any specific reason?

Basically I need a good 3D Blu Ray that can do this. So let me know. The oppo-93 is way too expensive and so cannot afford that right now.

Please help.

That Panasonic, the Sony 790 (which also plays SACDs) I think Samsung has 1 or 2 and yes the Oppos. Seems I've seen some getting a good deal on the Sony lately.

I have the Sony, and it isn't able to do simultaneous audio. It is either/or and there isn't a one button way to change.

I am now looking at the Pioneer BDP-62FD as well as the Oppo and Panasonic 500 or 310.

I didn't see if you were referring to a specific receiver or making a blanket statement. I can tell you my Anthem MRX does degrade the picture, deleting all information below 5% signal level.

Receiver: Anthem MRX-500

I too have the same setup but with the 310 model and it sounds just as good as any 1.4 reciever. As far as the 500 doing the same then the answer is yes its like the bdt 300 which i used to own and also has the advantage of having the analogue outputs.
