You never know. Sometimes it's the way they've been shipping it. They never say.
You can only have too much ammo if you're on fire or swimming.

So no exchange program for the unlucky buyers of the first edition?

They're still selling the first edition, so I guess they see it as perfectly viable.

Haha! Yeah, you're probably right.

I only meant that, if they're still offering the initial version for sale, they're not likely to also offer a free upgrade of it to the new remaster.

(A bit of disclosure: I bought the first version for the digibook, and haven't actually gotten round to replacing the discs yet myself. )

Yeah I've just finished watching the first edition digibook too, but didn't buy the new version. It's not horrible, but really not good either. I'd give the video a 3/5 as some landscape shots look great but all those undetailed faces, urgh...

I have both versions (including the digibook). I never thought the original version looked that bad. The remastered version is the exact same transfer, the exact same disc menu and everything. The only thing different is that the excessive DNR has been either removed or greatly reduced. The result? You see more grain, hence greater detail, but I can't really say that's a huge improvement because there is a little too much grain and uneven emulsion marks (noticed in skies). I've only watched both versions on a 50" Panasonic plasma. I can only guess that the first, heavily DNR'd version was horrible when displayed on something larger, but on my 50" plasma, I wasn't that bothered by it. I only got the remastered version because it's a favorite film.

Actually they are different transfers. Aside from the detail improvement, the color is much more natural and pleasing on the remastered and there are framing differences between the two versions. The remastered version looks outstanding projected.
