I never upgraded to the Blu-ray because of the reviews but now I wish I would have when it was cheap because I guess it still looks better than the DVD. I can't believe this went out of print. I wonder if Lionsgate will put it out again eventually.

Well you're not out of luck yet - it's available on Amazon used from $5.70 on up.

I want Near Dark on blu-ray but not this crappy looking version with it's hideous Twilight looking cover-art. I'll stick with my DVD for now.

We need Shout to pick this up along with The Hitcher (1986). If Poltergeist 2 & 3 and RoboCop 3 can get Collector's Edition's and nice new transfers then surely 2 80s classics with way more fans are deserving of the same treatment.

Yeah...I bought it years ago. It was cheaper than a used DVD copy. But I created a custom art cover for this. I'm glad I own it, but it doesn't look blu-ray quality.

As much as I would like either of these titles getting some well deserved BD TLC, Shout simply doesn't have a deal with the companies owning either film so that's just not going to happen in the foreseeable future (if ever).

I also never bought this due to the overwhelmingly negative response to the blu. I'm still optimistic this will get the transfer and supplements one of the best horror films of the 80's deserves.

Vestron needs to do a new anniversary edition with 2K or 4K remastered and all that

Yeah it's not about being "deserving." What does and doesn't get released on Blu more often has to do with corporate licensing than anything else...it's why we have this format where, oddly, sometimes it's been easier to get a movie that's a bomb out (that the studios don't care about) than it is a successful film (WHAT ABOUT BOB, TRUE LIES, etc.) that the studios "hang onto" for a rainy day, for themselves.

If THE HITCHER was owned by MGM we'd have seen it years ago. Unfortunately it's an HBO owned property and that entire library has pretty much been held under lock and key. Same deal with ABC Motion Pictures and that whole line.

MGM will license out everything under the sun -- they need the money more than anyone, seemingly -- but not everyone else does. Sadly.

I got this blu-ray at some time last year for $8.

Cool movie, but a really mediocre transfer all around.

The poor DNR'd transfer is what keeps me from watching this as much as I want to. Great film that needs more love on Blu-ray.

Shout got "Tales from the Hood" which was owned by HBO (not sure if it still is, but the long OOP dvd is from them), so maybe there is hope. Would love to see Hitcher and Don King: Made in America come out in collectors editions from Shout someday. Only other studios I see for Tales are Savoy Pictures and 40 Acres & a Mule, not sure if one of them got the rights back or what.

From the Tales in the Hood thread:

Quote:
Tales from the Hood is part of the Savoy Pictures library. HBO used to have a distribution agreement in place with Savoy Pictures, but that arrangement ended a long time ago. In 2006, the library was sold to Universal Pictures / Focus Features.

I have a bigger question than The Hitcher...

...does HBO still own the rights to Split Second? I want THAT movie to receive a stateside blu-ray release.

nothing that Rutger Hauer did in the 90s will EVER be bigger than when he did Hitcher in 86.

Agreed. Also there's a strange artifact line that's not a part of the source or on any other home media releases across the majority of the running time of this release too. It's very hard to spot but it's there. Really annoying.

The existing Blu-ray of Near Dark is an improvement over the DVD, even considering the flaws, so it's worth keeping.

I'd like to see an improved high definition release of the movie, though. I would also like to see better cover art that doesn't look like a bad homage to the Twilight series.

I don't know guys. I'm going to go the other way on this one.

I'm not super crazy about Near Dark, but I love that Twilight rip-off cover.

It's a work of art.

How hard must it have been to get Adrian Pasdar to look that much like Robert Pattinson. Plus Pasdar is not even one of the vampires in the movie, or at least not like cover suggests.

Still not convinced? Then just imagine a big twilight fan who was somehow fooled by this sitting down with Near Dark expecting bloodlessly chaste Mormon teen vampire romance. It makes me chuckle every time I look at it.

So much crap cover art out there. But if you're going to make crap cover art, it might as well mislead Twilight fans into being horrified in the most evil way possible, I say.

It is indeed a really funny cover in terms of how misleading it is. So funny, I had to look at it again right after reading your post, warrian.
