My question is pretty well much in the title, I bought mine back in April of this year. I am thinking about looking into importing some region free movies but I want to make sure my PS3 is region free or not.

You don't need a region free player to play a region free movie. You do need a region free player for region locked movies however. With that said the PS3 is not region free.

A ps3 from North America will only play blu rays that are Region A or region free.
You will need to do some research to make sure the blu rays you are importing are region free. The good news is that many titles are region free. Also, some additional information to be aware of: 1080p/24fps is standard for blu ray worldwide. However, ps3's won't display standard definition PAL content, which can be found in the extras of some titles. If extras are important to you, do your research. Also, there is 1080i/50 content that exists and has trouble on US displays. It isn't that common though, but it is good to be aware of. This site is pretty good about listing correct region information. |

Thanks for the information guys! Extras aren't really important to me, for the most part I just check out gag reels/bloopers more than anything. Although there have been a few occasions where I did check out almost all of the extras.

And yes any of those could be problematic. Note: usually if content is made for the NA market it will be 24p , but if it is a TV program for the European market then there is a good chance that it will be 50i. |

I can appreciate your pet peeves. Pedantry for the sake of it is one of mine.
But come on, in any discussion about region compatibility PAL and NTSC are still the crux of it, so much so that several reviews on this site will mention "PAL" content on a disc. Like it or not, it means what it means. You won't be doing the OP any favours muddying the waters. Forest for the trees. Cheers. |

Also you talked of 50i for the 1080p stuff anyways so how would it have been more complex to to just leave it at 25p/50i. |
