Best of the best surprise endings:
Planet of the Apes (1968)
The Usual Suspects
Most M. Night Shyamalan films
Saw
Fight Club
Shining

Surprise ending that weren't all that impressive:
Identity
Shutter Island
The Others
Empire Strikes Back (love the Star Wars movies, but doesn't qualify as an ending)

Good surprise endings still not mentioned on this thread yet:
The Sting
[Show spoiler]A feel-good ending that single-handedly won it the Best Picture Oscar!

Skyfall
[Show spoiler]I was wondering the entire time whether Ralph Fiennes was a good guy or a bad guy! Good Guy! Yay!

I really cannot read any of this post.

Every movie I loved that had a surprise ending, I did not know that going into it. So if I see a movie listed here that I haven't seen, then spoiler or not, I will be expecting a surprise. Which now, is no longer a surprise.

Planet of the Apes is probably the best there is. One I really like though is the ending of Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge - a short film that the Twilight Zone used in season 4.

I am too young to have watched Planet of the Apes, without having the surprise ending built into my gene memory. Did you get to watch it without already knowing?

My sister told me Fight Club. Just, strait up, TOLD me. WTFFF?

Am I being to clichéd mentioning The Sixth Sense, or the next few Shyamalan films that followed? Will Smith will be a figment of the kid's imagination in After Earth, we all know that...

Psycho. The Usual Suspects. The Holy Grail. There's a lot of good ones!

Wow! Forgot that one!

I find Hard Candy's ending similar. Not the film at all though.

I just watched Brazil for the first time the other day. I didn't see that ending coming. It was quite the surprise.

The Machinist. Very similar to Fight Club but still an amazing film with an exceptional performance from Christian Bale.
