They were digitally remastered for the DVD release but I haven't seen them in HD. I would love to have them on Blu-ray!
Blu-ray wish list: Far from the Madding Crowd, Maurice, Performance, The Remains of the Day, Ryan’s Daughter and Wuthering Heights (1939).

I usually don't get TV stuff on DVD (Band of Brothers being an exception), but boy, I would love getting my hands on such a set! Best Holmes ever.

I think Acorn Media will release the Blu-rays in America at some point, but I don't think there is much demand for them in Britain.

It's a very good series but too much at £290
Elliot: He's a man from outer space and we're taking him to his spaceship.
Greg: Well, can't he just beam up?
Elliot: This is *reality*, Greg.

Nice! Let's hope ITV take a leaf out of their book ;-) At a tad lower price too.

I'd love to upgrade this but ITV doesn't seem to release many TV series on blu ray

I read that after the poor sales of Sharpe ITV stopped BD releases of their classic TV shows in the UK. They are still remastering them in HD for TV broadcast as we see on ITV3HD. It is upto overseas distributors like Acorn in the US to release on BD. they have done most of Poirot, plus some Marple and Midsomer Murder.

Exactly.
People failed to pick up Sharpe at £50 to £60. Too many people in the UK say they will only pick up a TV show BD if its less than £20, so not worthwhile for then to release. Japan and US will pay a premium for this stuff.
Another example is the price of Poirot on BD in the US from Acorn. Its price would not get sales in the UK and you would have to add VAT on top as well.

I would have bought "Sharpe" but read somewhere that it wasn't a complete set and, more importantly, featured episodes that were just upscaled versions of the DVD and not true HD. There seemed to be little poit in buying an incomplete and not truly HD set.

The "missing episodes" were, I presume, the two more recent films/series, I think for rights reasons. They're available separately anyhow.

As for the upscaling, I believe they couldn't find the original footage for some of it -- as the box notes, it's less than 5%. It's been a while so I don't remember the full story, but I think it's all in one episode. Of course, being a box set it has a long running time, and 5% works out at something like an hour. Still, that's 95% of it in proper HD, and the other bit presumably lost forever.

Any SHARPE fans who skipped on the Blu-ray set are doing themselves a disservice. The visual and audio upgrade over the DVD collection is substantial. the elements were recomposed for 1.85:1 aspect ratio, and this is the one case where the occasional cropping improved the product.

The action is more immediate and involving, and detail is through the roof, even considering the 16mm original source material. Somehow the battles even look bigger thanks to the new framing. (Probably got rid of a lot of empty space at the end of the small battle lines.) Even the 45 minutes of SHARPE'S GOLD that was upscaled looks considerably better than my imported DVD did.

The set is still available and quite affordable for Region B viewers. Americans who haven't wised up and invested in a region-free player are out of luck.
