Marantz TT-185? - Blu-ray Forum

Howdy, y'all.

Looking at getting into vinyl and was checking the local used market. Found a Marantz TT-185 for $40. Does anyone know anything about this model?

I haven't used it, but it looks to be a bottom-of-the-line TT from the 80's. This is after "Marantz" was bought out and got cheap.

It would get you started, but you'd want to upgrade it pretty quickly.

Thanks. Not sure if I want to bother with it then, even at $40. Would still need a pre-amp. My Denon AVR-1712 does not have an input.

yeah...keep an eye on Craigslist. Watch out for someone selling an old receiver and Turntable together. That's how I got my Marantz 2245 and old Dual 1264. The amp is great and still use it, but I upgraded the TT so I could test out different cartridges. If you have any record stores around your area, talk to the people there. I know the place here occasionally takes in used turntables and receivers.

If you have the $$, the Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB isn't a bad TT. Built to look and act like the Technics 1200. Has a built in Pre-amp, so that would save you some $$. I don't own one, but if 200 was my budget and I was just getting into the world of TT's then I would get this one. I played around with one in a store not too long ago.

Even with this TT, you will soon fight the urge to upgrade. (I'm currently in the saving $$ mode)

What type of budget are you working with here ? And remember you'll also need to purchase a phono stage
