I understand where you are coming from completely (I am a musician myself) however I feel that you are allowing this to annoy you more then it should. It is not as if they replaced the music entirely for that scene (like in the Ewoks celebration scene of ROTJ). The music cue simply starts at a different time then when originally aired. It is still there.

All I am saying is that to allow a small inconsistency like that to ruin your experience of BOBW in full HD glory which has been beautifully done by CBS-D, AND presented in 7.1 is a bit much.

If Jones had wanted the cue to start 5 seconds earlier, he'd have started it 5 seconds earlier. It's been in that position for almost 25 years. It's the difference between the episode being right and wrong.

Somebody systematically went in, moved it, then looped a phrase to make it fit. For absolutely no reason whatsoever as far as I can make out.

I just re-examined the original discs. On 721 "Encounter at Farpoint", the primary dialog is audible at normal levels on both the center and right front channels, but not the left front. I can discern no differences between the center channel and the right front channel, so this may very well be just the center channel being mapped to both the center and right front channels.

However, on episodes 111 "Hide and Q", 105 "Haven", 113 "The Big Goodbye", 114 "Datalore", 116 "11001001", and 112 "Too Short a Season" the dialog is at significant audible levels all 3 front channels, but the music and sound effects in the left front and right front channels are not identical to each other. The second part of the main title music has a very obvious stereo effect where this can be easily identified when listening to only the LF and RF channels.

The only possibility I can think of that would result in this that would have nothing to do with mixing, is that the LF and RF channels on the DTS 7.1 mix were inadvertently replaced by the LT and RT channels that were intended for the Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack. This most certainly was not simply a matter of the 7.1 channels of the DTS mix being mis-mapped among themselves, except perhaps on "Encounter at Farpoint".

I used 115 "Angel One" as a comparison without the issue. In it normal dialog is nearly inaudible on the LF and RF channels. In any case I am glad that CBS Digital and Paramount went to the effort they did to correct it.

I am curious why they cut the end of part 1/start of part 2 like they did. That is not how it was done back when it was first shown on tv and that cut in the music is noticable even if this is the first time you are watching it. I thought it flowed much better the way they originally had it. but by no means am I going to stop watching the episode because of it. had to steal it back from my brother as he had it for the last month - was going through withdrawal and watching part 1 alone just wasn't doing it.

Any Canadians who don't own it yet - $11 at Amazon.ca.

Did you not request replacement discs for this? CBS issued replacements with the corrected audio.

All I can tell you is that the 7.1 mix was irrefutably done correctly. The problems occurred somewhere else in the workflow.

I do have the replacements with the corrected audio, but I do also still have the originally issued discs.
