So what's the consensus? Which framing/color grading/restoration do you like better? For the 3D version, or for the 2D version? They look very different. We also get significantly more Kate Winslet nudity in the 3D version. Including full frontal. I wonder how the open matte passed as PG-13.

I watch the 3D version in 2D myself and prefer it over the 2D version. I like the color timing better (warmer), the picture looks cleaner even though more DNR was applied, it was done very tastefully. And I like that the picture fills the entire screen

Huh? What? No. This is not pan and scan, this is open matte. You're actually seeing more of the picture. 20+ years and people still don't get it

i think your wrong, otherwise all movies would be made this way, fullscreen, why do they bother to make 2.40 etc movies with the massive black borders if they can just make it full screen and not loose any of the film information, they cant thats why.

Wikipedia Titanic (1997 film)
Quote:
For the 3D release, Cameron opened up the Super 35 film and expanded the image of the film into a new aspect ratio, from 2:35:1 to 1:78:1, allowing the viewer to see more image on the top and bottom of the screen.[139] The only scene entirely redone for the re-release was Rose's view of the night sky at sea, on the morning of April 15, 1912. The scene was replaced with an accurate view of the night-sky star pattern, including the Milky Way, adjusted for the location in the North Atlantic Ocean in April 1912. The change was prompted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who had criticized the scene for showing an unrealistic star pattern. He agreed to send film director Cameron a corrected view of the sky, which was the basis of the new scene.[140]

You're wrong. Some scope movies are framed that way via cropping from a full film cell, like titanic was, other scope movies are filmed with anamorphic len's that squish a scope image onto a regular film cell.

I'll default to the 3D in future purely because the conversion is extraordinarily good.

I can say between the 3D and 2D, I like certain aspects. I like the 3D 1.78:1 aspect, but I prefer the color timing and the non-application of DNR in the 2D version. I just wished that Jim Cameron made the deleted scenes 3D with the 1.78:1 aspect ration and the same color timings as the 2D and 3D Version also if they gave the Deleted scenes a DTS-MA 5.1 mix instead of DD 5.1 I would be glad. Below are the same frame but the difference between the 2D Final Cut and the 2D Deleted Scenes.
2D Final Cut Color Timing

2D Deleted Scene Color Timing

Congrats on the new projector and this movie in my opinion should be one of the first movies to watch. I haven't even watched it in bluray 2D and don't intend to. The last time I watched it was on DVD.
Love 3D technology and am addicted to it.
