Just watched it, 'twas a very good conversion. Right from the title sequence you can see that some thought has gone into it. It would've been so easy to just offset the titles and leave the background as is, but you can see several layers of depth between the fighters and the guys on the deck. The rest of the movie was equally competent, with very little crosstalk and some very effective shots. The only time it ever felt forced was the shots of Maverick at the bar right at the end of the film, the background looking very 'cut out' and not at all natural.
Much has been said about the grain, and maybe it's just my tiny 55" display, but it didn't trouble me in the least. The title sequence is what it is, one long optical complete with the requisite chunky grain, and it looked very well handled compared to the smeary DNR'ed mess on the 2D disc. Some scenes are silky smooth, while the grain spikes in others, which is typical behaviour of a combination of faster and slower stock. I'm seeing nothing untoward, save for some iffy compression here and there. The revised colour and contrast is another bone of contention, and I've gotta say that it was a great fit for the movie. The bleached, blown-out look and the burnished skin tones lent themselves well to the sun-drenched West Coast locales. The teal I can take or leave, but these things are never quite as offensive in motion as they are when comparing caps, because of the brain's tendency to adjust to what we're seeing. Heck, I swear there were a couple of shots of actual blue sky near the end of the film. In other words: I like it a lot. Last edited by Geoff D; 04-27-2013 at 07:16 PM. |

Do Par slips eventually become unavailable any faster or slower that slipcovers from other studios' release? Just trying to prioritize shopping: I want the lenticular slip and am wondering if it will be gone from Amazon and/or Best Buy in, say, six months.
