USA Killing Season (2013) - August 20, 2013

Quote:
American military veteran Benjamin Ford (Robert De Niro) has fled to a cabin retreat somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains, to forget the painful memories of the Bosnian War he fought in. One day, visitor Emil Kovac (John Travolta), a European tourist, knocks on his door, and the two men begin an unlikely friendship. When it develops that Kovac is in fact a former Serbian soldier bent on revenge, there begins a one-on-one confrontation and battle between the two throughout the harsh mountain environment.

This was a troubled production from the get go, its origins started with a script titled "Shrapnel", it was supposed to be a reunion project for John Travolta & Nicolas Cage, But Cage's schedule was booked when the production company wanted to begin filming, then Bobby de niro stepped in, reports of Travolta being a pre Madonna, and not wanting to do his own stunts like the much older De Niro was doing. Then the groping allegations & lawsuits came pouring in and Millennium Films was not able to find an US theatrical distributor. The film is directed by the same fellow who brought us such classics as Daredevil & Ghost Rider.

Sucks that it's pretty much going straight to DVD/Blu-Ray.Sounds like a interesting movie even tho it's just kind of along the lines of First Blood/The Edge/The Hunted/The Grey...ect were its Man .Vs Man and Man .Vs Wild. But non the less still interesting with two pretty big stars in their hay day.

I may have to get this, because I remember when it was being filmed around here in my area. The filming locations of Sweetwater Creek State Park, Georgia, Stone Mountain, Georgia, Mountain City, Georgia, and Tallulah Falls, Georgia are all close to where I live. In fact, I go running out at Sweetwater Creek State Park all of the time, and I remember when several of the running routes were closed off because this film was shooting there.

Incidentally, Tallulah Falls is where the cliff-climbing sequences from the movie, Deliverance, were filmed.

This movie looks really good to me. I don't understand why no one's talking about it. It's a shame it is going straight to video. With these two legends it should be a 100 million blockbuster. Anyone else looking forward to this or am I the only one.

Just found out about this movie. I'm shocked it's a DTV because it looks really good.
"The Minneapolis Lakers moved to Los Angeles where there are no lakes. The Oilers moved to Tennessee were there is no oil. The Jazz moved to Salt Lake City where they don't allow music. The Oakland Raiders moved to L.A. and then back to Oakland; no one in Los Angeles seemed to notice. Continued expansion diluted the talent pool, forcing owners to recruit heavily from prisons, mental institutions, and Texas."

I saw it ...once you'll see it you'll understand why nobody in their right minds would release this theatrically. The only good things about this movie are the actors(not necessarily their acting ) and the scenery. However, if you're a deniro and/or travolta fan there's no reason not to see this.

Also, cropped from 2.39:1 to 1.78:1 for Blu. Equal parts squeezing the sides and opening up the bottom and the top. I've personally never seen a film look better for having done this. What I was willing to pay for this title was fairly low and it just went down.

Not entirely true. Some quotes from this review: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/9293...ng_season.html

"For starters, the movie is presented in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio, but when watching the bonus materials, I noticed that in both the featurette and the theatrical trailer, the movie had a 2.35:1 ratio. So I did a comparison between some shots in the extras and the same shots in the movie, and – sure enough – the film has been cropped on the sides to get it into the 1.78:1 ratio we see here. But I also noticed that more information can be seen on the top and bottom of the screen than what is seen in the 2.35:1 ratio in the extras. Since 'Killing Season' had a very limited theatrical run (no more than a dozen theaters), I'm assuming that it was decided to reframe the film for home video."

It seems what I said then was, in fact, entirely true.

I really enjoyed this movie. Thought the action was pretty good. Torture scenes were cool. Its at least worth renting, but I am glad I bought it. Will definitely watch it again.

netflix has this for free. and I've watched it twice, it was surprisingly good. I bought Travolta's role...I thought it was excellent. De Niro was good too.
