Exclamation Anger from a scratch

I have finally been getting around to watching my copy of the 2nd season of Star Trek: TOS. It's been going fine up until the 4th disc (The Tribble disc, no less). At around the point of the fight in the episode, my Sony player began emitting scratching sounds and the framerate slowed to a slideshow, then a complete halt with audio still trying to chug along. Eventually, the show would come to a complete stop and kick me out to the main menu.

I assumed it was a problem with the player, and tried it on a PS3 (the first version if it makes a difference), and I was able to get to the point where Kirk sits on a tribble, but then the problem reared it's head again in full force. I was unable to fast forward any further in the show.

Upon viewing the disc, I noticed what may be a scratch around the middle. Is re-surfacing it going to be a good idea, or am I stuck with a (very crippled) disc?

I managed to get glue on a Blu-ray disc, one from my Prison Break boxset so I wasn't happy at all.
I spoke to a local company and they stated it couldn't be repaired and then I sent it to these guy's http://www.repairadisc.co.uk/
I'm not sure where in the world you are but they sent my disc back good as new so I was delighted my boxset wasn't ruined.
Worth a go in my opinion.
