Do you guys think the longer wait time caused the lower box office? Or do you think the first film didn't translate as well as we thought it did?

since when is 200million+ a low BO Domestically? this movie did extremely well given its competition.. Its still in theaters now so coming out in September is around the 3 month period.. 2009 ST also did extremely well at the BO.. money talks with Sequels, I just think JJ was working on other stuff in the meantime.. I have a feeling the third movie should in theaters in 2016

I think it did. 4 year wait and this is what they gave us? ugh

Also this movie was nowhere near as fun (or good) as Trek 09

$200m+ domestic is a heck of a chunk of dough, but it's not the $257m that the first one pulled down, not least when the inflated 3D pricing and wider IMAX rollout of the sequel is taken into account. The foreign totals will make up the shortfall, but I can't help but feel that Paramount will be disappointed that STID hasn't significantly improved on its predecessor.

They should've followed up with something hot on the heels of ST '09 to keep that creative energy flowing. Instead, the 4 year gap has resulted in a self-satisfied grab-bag of fan service that shamelessly rips off Trek's finest hour.

The first release was slightly better than this installment, but I still thought it was worth the four out of five stars. Benedict Cumberbatch's performance was great and extremely enjoyable to watch. I'll look forward to seeing this again at home.

I agree. It was a fun movie but just felt kind of lazy to me, especially when they said they spent so much time making sure that the script was right.

I wasn't aware STID was pulled from theaters already.

The length of IMAX runs is predetermined ahead of time. Also, as with The Dark Knight Rises, IMAX prolly promised a longer run than usual since part of the movie was shot with IMAX 15/70 cameras. Once IMAX and the movie studio agree on the number of days a movie will play, IMAX has to keep it, even if no one shows up in Week 3.

The manager of the Bob Bullock IMAX in Austin told me that that's the reason why his theater shows fewer and fewer mainstream Hollywood movies as each year passes. Most movies play to a near-empty auditorium after the second weekend.

No it hasn't, but it will lose a large chunk of theaters starting this week. The screen losses the past couple of weeks has been from multiplexes with multiple screen, the four week requirement expires this Thursday, and now theaters can drop the film outright. With Man of Steel opening, the Imax theaters will likely be gone (WB has an exclusive contract), as well as a large amount of the 3D screens.

With the film at $200 million as of Monday night, it probably adds another $35 million to it's domestic total, and while $235 is a good total, it's still a disappointment... I think everyone, especially Paramount, thought this would be on par, or do better, than the 2009 film. Especially when you factor in the 3D premium.

The loose theaters break away from the planet and go into space? They should tighten them down on their foundations! Sad to lose theaters this way!

I enjoyed it more on my second viewing as well. There is so much going on in the film, that watching it the second time is really nice.

I saw it once in theaters... but I'm gonna hold out until September... so I can buy it once and watch it over and over without having to pay to see it, over and over.

After $17M more overseas this weekend STID is now at $412M worldwide. It still has life left in China, France, and Brazil and will have a nice total in Japan in August when it opens. At the end it is likely to have a global take of $500M.

Yeah, if it reaches $500 million worldwide, that would be nice. About the same business as the last one. Hoping it appeals to other countries and that there will be a BOOM in the home market.

It wouldn't be about the same, it would be $115M more than the 09' film.

Huh, for some reason I thought the first one was in the high 400 millions, weird. Well at least now I feel good knowing that the sequel is not behind it any longer. Even with the addition 3D fees
