For Kiki, there were two US DVD releases. The 2003 US DVD had the 1998 Disney Dub as it was originally presented with the English theme songs replacing the Japanese theme songs, the behind the microphone feature, storyboards, and original promos.

The 2010 special edition DVD was released when Ponyo came out on BD. It has a modified version of the 1998 Disney dub, which restored the Japanese theme songs and toned down some of the late Phil Hartman's dialogue as Jiji to be more in line with the original Japanese presentation, including the removal of
[Show spoiler]the 1998 English addition of Jiji talking again, where in the Japanese original he remains silent. Therefore, the English dub is now more in line with the Japanese original.

Besides the storyboards, behind the microphone, and promo materials carried over from the 2003 release, much of the features that will be on the BD were created for the 2010 special edition DVD release and will be in HD, as the new material from the other 2010 special edition DVDs (Castle in the Sky and Totoro) ended up in HD in their respective BD releases.

The upcoming BR releases for Kiki and Princess, will they have the original Japanese soundtrack? I notice they have the English voiceover.

Thanks

Yes, all US Studio Ghibli releases have the original Japanese audio.

I just recently purchased all of the Studio Ghibli blu rays that are available in the US (excited to hear about the 3 coming later this year!!) and was wondering if the non Disney releases (From Up On Poppy Hill and Grave of the Fireflies) are supposed to come with slipcovers. I bought both from Amazon and did not receive them on either.

From Up on Poppy Hill had one, but I don't think Grave ever came with one. I bought Poppy Hill from Amazon last year and it didn't have a slip either.

Hmmm it must have been a pressing thing where only the first press received slipcovers. I'm not too worried about it since it wouldn't match the Disney covers on my shelf. Thanks a lot!

Yep you are correct. Poppy had one during the first pressing but Grave never did.
I still see Poppy with slips but they are usually pretty beat up.

Am I the only one who thinks Nausicaa and Laputa feel incredibly different from the rest of the Ghibli films that have been put out, especially Nausicaa?

I don't really know how to describe it, but from the character designs, stories, and what not just seem somewhat dated, in my opinion. I'm not sure dated is the right word, but they just look like typical early anime films with the look and mood. Again, I'm not even sure if I'm describing it the right way, but a film like Totoro or Grave of the Fireflies, which came out about 3-5 years after these two feel incredibly different - like two different worlds.

^^^

Considering that both of those films were the studios first and they were probably getting the feel of how they wanted to animate.

Thanks for the response.

The stories in their films are not bad, but I think they started standing out more and more as the years progressed.

Yeah the style of both of those movies it very different from later on.
You can tell though that even though later on the new movies still have that same feel. I mean Whisper of The Heart characters look similar to Castle in the Sky.

Yeah, I noticed that about Whisper of the Heart, as well.

It's definitely a throwback of sorts to the old style, but with some more modern elements that were explored in the films following the early 1980s one.

Does anybody know if the Blu of Kiki will be like the 2003 version or the 2010 version? Personally, I prefer the 2003 version... Maybe that's just me though.

I would love the option to choose either version! But lets be honest, Disney will probably just port the most recent version to blu ray like you said.

It won't surprise me if Disney will port it either. Don't get me wrong, I understand what Disney was doing with the 2010 version, I just love the 2003 version, probably because it's what I grew up with.
