Canada The Man Who Fell To Earth (David Bowie) - 4K restoration from Mongrel Media

Coming on November 1. They confirmed to me that it's the same 4K restoration done by the Studio Canal in the UK.

Limited edition https://www.amazon.ca/Man-Who-Fell-E...34943&sr=1-235

Non limited https://www.amazon.ca/Man-Who-Fell-E...35098&sr=1-236

I know it's a Canadian and not the US release, but since the US release will likely not happen anytime soon, and since this is a North America release, and thus Region A, I've decided to post it here

How does the 4K restoration stack up against the Criterion? I have that OOP Criterion and it's a beauty!

I hope MM releases other SC titles like the Man in the White Suit. I really dislike the color grading on Ran but I doubt MM would change it.

Any reviews since the release is so imminent?

Guess not, which is strange, since usually the reviewers get a copy in advance so they can write glowing reviews and boost sales at launch.

Canadian releases aren't usually reviewed on this site. If they are, it probably won't be until after release. I am sure a few of us will purchase this and post our thoughts here.
My top 25 films:

1) Jackie Brown 2) Nashville 3)Apocalypse Now 4) Pulp Fiction 5) All About Eve 6) Blue Velvet 7) Zodiac 8) The Getaway (1972) 9) Almost Famous 10) Tenebre 11) Sorcerer 12) The Wolf of Wall Street 13) Mildred Pierce 14) The Towering Inferno 15) Talk to Her 16) Dressed to Kill 17) Rabid Dogs 18) City of God 19) The Dead Girl 20) Adaptation 21) Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind 22) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 23) Happiness 24) Spirited Away 25) Harold and Maude

Fair enough. I was actually thinking that the British release might be discussed.

Maybe dvdbeaver will get an advance copy (fingers crossed).

Looks like it's out in the U.K. But not reviewed yet.

Me as well. Plus the Canada version has the easier (for me) region code.

But I am hoping to hear about the quality before it ships. If it is not am improvement over the Criterion blu ray, I may pass.

Considering it is a new 4K remaster, it will be an improvement, just like The Third Man was.

I hope that's true. I've seen a few remasters that have the wrong color balance or too much noise reduction or suffer from flaws in the source material that have emerged since an older copy was made.

The worst was the first HD transfer of Citizen Kane, where noise reduction was turned up so high that it erased raindrops!

But yes, I agree, unless someone screwed up, it should be an improvement.

Even then, there are borderline cases, like how the Criterion edition of Dekalog is at the wrong speed, so the definitive version is the UK edition.

You might wanna PM pro-bassonist and ask him if he's reviewing the UK version. He usually handles the Region B reviews on this site.

Studio Canal is still quite capable of messing things up but the Mongrel version will probably be the same except with a different encode.

I'm guessing that if the Studio Canal version looks bad, I should delay purchase of the Mongrel release until I hear it's alright.

The new 4K transfer is a big upgrade. On the old disc the opening title font is a solid red, but on the new disc you can clearly see that it's actually two distinct shades of red. The detail is incredible, and the colours look a lot more balanced.

[Show spoiler]As for the soundtrack, there's some good news, and there's some bad news. The good news is! - 'Hello Mary Lou' (Vocal Version) is exactly the same as the film version. The bad news is! - 'Bryce' is not the really cool vocoder track that you hear when Rip Torn gets into his car. It's just a very short Bluegrass instrumental, and I'm pretty sure that it's not in the film.
The UK version is B locked so I put my order in for the Canadian version.

Excellent. No screenshots but the description is convincing. I'll keep my Canadian order in place! Thanks for the link.
