I feel your pain. Fortunately screenarchives.com also sells WB Archive titles through their site, including the new Blu-ray releases. Prices are the same, too. Probably a good alternative for those outside the US.

Looking at the review just posted, I spotted something in one of the screenshots I never noticed before. In the picture of Natalie Wood looking at her reflection, to the right of the mirror there is a drawing of Ethel Merman. A nice nod to the woman who created the role of Rose in the original Broadway production.

I got my copy last week and I was thrilled with watching it, especially remembering that the only time I had seen it before was on an old B&W TV decades ago. Seeing it in color and wide-screen was awesome. Also had forgotten how great the songs were.

For WB's first Archive release on Blu-ray (well, actually tied with Deathtrap), the studio has done an admirable job on Gypsy, the fun musical biopic of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. Rosalind Russell stars as the irrepressible stage mother of all time, Rose, who dominates her cute daughter, Baby June, and then when June leaves, her awkward daughter, Louise (Natalie Wood). (In real life, there wasn't such a happy ending for Rose, and you might like to check it out through the internet.)
Video is excellent, and I only detected a very minor haloing in one scene. Unlike the regular WarnerArchives being on DVD-Rs, this is a regular Blu-ray. Audio is good, with voices mostly through the center speaker. During musical numbers, side speakers do get used. The only extras are two carried over from the DVD, but this time in HD (though rough footage), of one musical number cut from the film ("Together Wherever We Go") and another number that was trimmed in half for the final film ("You'll Never Get Away Fom Me"). There is also a trailer in HD (but not restored). This was a major musical, very important in Stephen Sondheim's early career. And though Rosalind Russell's singing voice is dubbed mostly by Lisa Kirk, Russell's acting makes the film very enjoyable. (By the way, be sure to look for the drawing of Ethel Merman, the original Rose on Broadway, on the wall near the full-length mirror in the stripper's dressing room. A nice touch.) Very much recommended. |

I'm planning to watch the new Blu-ray of GYPSY on New Year's Day afternoon, followed by the Blu-ray of THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS that evening to get the real Ethel Merman experience (not to mention some heavy similarities in basic premise).
I've seen at least one or two stage productions of GYPSY, but I think I've only seen clips of the film version so far, so I'm looking forward to it. I've seen THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS once before, and while it's not what you'd call "great" it's got some great numbers and looks spectacular on a big screen in full CinemaScope with stereo sound. |

Just picked up a used copy of Gypsy atAmoeba music in hollywood, it was priced 9.99 and with a 3 dollar store coupon it only cost me 6.99 plus tax
We couldn't play cheaper programing if we tried, and believe me WE TRIED.
