Despite being a child of the 80's, I've somehow never seen this movie. Looks like I'll be seeing it in February!

How about looking at the threads before posting the same ones over and over again? Thats all I was pointing out.

Can't you grasp that??

The fighter jet scenes in Green lantern give a small taste of what this movie wil be like.

I actually think thats where Legend 3D got the idea, when they converted that part in Green Lantern and saw how great it looked.

Looking forward to this release.

I preordered Top Gun 3D today because it's listed at $19.99 at amazon. Sounds like a good price. I do not have TG on blu-ray so this works for me.

Does $19.99 seem like a good price or not?

Great news! Down from $27.99 when I placed my order. Hoping the price continues to drop per their lowest price guarantee.

HDD has their review up and claim the 2D version is the same freaking transfer that's already been released three times (if you include HD DVD). That's so utterly disappointing. This is a fun movie, and I've long considered the blu-ray to be one of the most overrated on the format for video quality. It looks unnatural, DNR'ed within an inch of its life in some scenes, black crush all over the place...I seriously don't know how in the world that disc gets such consistently strong ratings from web sites. I'm not saying it's the worst transfer out there, but if the new 3D release is indeed the same 2D transfer, no way am I going anywhere near it.

To add insult to injury, the 3D version evidently *does* look like *it* has been restored. Ugh!

Understand your 2D disappointment, but it's great to hear that the movie has gone through a restoration at least for the 3D enthusiast fans of the movie!

Quote:
the whole movie appears (either before or during the conversion process) to have been either restored or re-mastered. Other than a couple specs of dirt, the source material and encode are nearly flawless. No damage (there has been minor scratching) or macroblocking. And yet, detail is more-or-less the same and color reproduction is resplendent with vivid primary colors like reds and blue. Black levels are deep with no crush. Even better still, the film grain remains despite all the digital wizardry on hand; 'Top Gun 3D' looks like, well, 'Top Gun' minted from fresh source materials.

Anybody located a stereoscopic trailer for this yet?

It bugs me when they don't release 3d trailers - it's a shady move...

Why does it get such consistent ratings? Because people are idiots. You only have to look at the opening credits to see how sludgy and processed the grain is. That sequence is one big optical, sure, but it shouldn't look as ****ed up as that. The rest of the movie continues in the same vein, although the DTS track is so aggressive it's a welcome distraction from the shitty picture.

I'm really jazzed about the 3D version though, and even if the 3D's rubbish I can always turn it off and watch the remastered version in 2D.

Paramount's converted 3D presentation is really quite satisfying and a natural fit for the film, much more so than even some new films converted to 3D with no real dramatic purpose or visual reason to be in 3D. The film benefits remarkably well from the conversion, and it's done tastefully and expertly. The aerial scenes benefit the most, but the entire film feels almost like a brand new experience with that added dimension.

That is what 3D conversion should always be about!

So in nerd news, I thought I would share that my wife and I are actually hosting a Top Gun 3D viewing party - proper attire is required, aviators, 'j'orts, etc...

This film was such a big hit with my age group when it came out, everyone is excited to see it again and in 3D. Should be a fun night!
