That seems pretty optimistic, unfortunately. I don't really care that much since they're a company that actually uses the time for good. However long it takes, it should be the definitive release for the forseeable future. I can't wait to upgrade my DVDs. Argento's classic movies have had a very spotted history on bluray, only that extremely expensive OOP version of Bird with the Crystal Plumage is much good, all releases of Suspiria have had gigantic issues, Tenebre had some early releases that blew, Phenomena hasn't had a particularly great release yet, Inferno had some questionable ones (though the BU one is pretty good), Opera's only out in a japanese version that barely looks better than a DVD upscale, etc. This reminds me, I need to rebuy the BU version of Deep Red, the only Bluray I've ever lost.

I don't know if this has been posted here before, but here you go:

Quote:
We’re working with the high-definition PHENOMENA and TENEBRE masters from France’s Wild Side, but doing additional work to make the presentations the best they can be. It’s not confirmed yet, but our plan is to include all three editions of PHENOMENA: the 116-minute version, the 110-minute version and New Line’s 82-minute CREEPERS. It might be fun to include CREEPERS in hi-def for the first time.” Both PHENOMENA and TENEBRE will include new interviews and other bonus features as well.

Three versions of the film on 1 BD would be self defeating.
CREEPERS is worthless IMHO. How about a branched version for the 116 & 110 min. versions.
Why waste disc space better served by boosting the encoding?

This is not a concern for me at all. Especially, since Synapse is releasing this title. I have full faith that if they include all 3 cuts in HD, they won't sacrifice any PQ. In my opinion, Synapse has great quality control. Equal to any label in the world.

I was actually going to be importing Tenebrae until I found out Synapse was releasing it. Anyone have any idea when they think we will see it?

Synapse might go the same route Scream Factory did with Lord of Illusions and have two cuts on one disc and the other cuts on the other disc.

I'd like to think the full cut will be on it's own disc alongside some bonus features and the shorter cuts will be on the second disc

Why would you assume all three cuts would be on a single Blu-ray? And re: branching to include the 116 and 110 cuts, that would be a programming nightmare as in many cases, the 116-minute cut literally only contains a couple extra frames of particular shots.

I actually think the CREEPERS cut has some value. While I think the 110-minute cut is the overall "best" version of the film, I prefer the pared-to-the-bone edits of some dialogue scenes in the CREEPERS cut.

Chris

You can get Creepers on DVD for less than five bucks or stream it on a couple of different services if you really feel the need to waste an hour and a half. The Arrow blu is great, but I will get this as a completist if it comes out sooner than later. Phenomena is my favorite Argento film.

The Arrow Blu-ray has a very problematic English/Italian hybrid soundtrack. It was very sloppily done and goes out of sync in several places.

Looks like my wish might come true . Not that I prefer Creepers, but I really love when a film that has significantly different cuts includes all of them. Otherwise it kind of feels incomplete to me (Heaven's Gate).

Can anyone tell me the difference between the 110 min and 116 min cuts? Is one theatrical, and the other a director's cut or extended? Which one is the best cut, to watch first?

Argento virgin here. As a big horror fan I'm hoping to finally catch up this year and seek out the films currently available on U.S. BD before these three Synapse titles come out.

P.S. If they include all three cuts I would think they would be spread across two discs.

The 116 min is the Italian cut, and features segments where only Italian dialogue exists. The 110 min is the International cut, which was then butchered down into the Creepers version. I'm pretty sure the Italian cut is the director's cut, and the International cut is also approved by him, but the Creepers cut isn't.

However Synapse handle it, it'll be fine. They're one of the few labels that treat compression as important as the other elements of PQ.

Great thing obese this thread, I was about to import the Tenebre BR in a week or so to upgrade my DVD. Phenomena I haven't seen yet so I'm looking forward to that as well. I wonder how long it'll be before these come out.

The transfers on those are terrible. Why bother when Synapse is releasing with superior picture quality?

The differences between the 116-minute and 110-minute cuts are often very minor, like literally down to some shots in the 116 being a few frames longer. My GUESS is the 116 was quickly finished because they had a deadline to make for the Italian cinema release, then Dario and his editor Franco Fraticelli further refined the cut until they arrived at the 110-minute running time of the "International Cut". The 110-minute cut really does feel like a more finished film, trimming minor excess fat from the 116, and it actually includes two shots missing from the 116-minute cut (although to be fair, those two additional shots are used to cover up edits made to the 116-minute cut).

I'll go with the 110 min cut then when I watch it. The 116 min one I'll watch further down the road to shake it up.

I find the 116-minute "integral cut" interesting though I've only seen it twice and can't say which I prefer. I quite like all the different inserts but unique shots can literally last a couple seconds, so seamless branching doesn't seem like an option.

I Love both films. Phenomena has the added pleasure of Donald Pleasance and Jennifer Connolly.

Synapse can take as long as they want with these. They're my two favorite Argento films (especially Phenomena) and I want the best editions possible. 110 min cut is perfect.
