Just saw Jaws on Blu for the first time; excellent PQ - though not perfect, far better than the DVD.

This is a perfect summer film; the storyline involving the small resort town business owners worried about closing the beach (due to the shark) because of the money they will lose brings to mind these towns on the New England coast that primarily get their money from tourists during the summer, and then essentially shut down in the Fall/Winter seasons....

Since this is the first time I've seen the film on HD & on a large set, I never before noticed the incredibly ugly/tacky suit jackets the Mayor of the town always wore; his worst fashion statement was wearing the gray suit jacket with all of the anchors - I know he was probably trying to be hip since it had a nautical theme, but IMHO it looked ridiculous. His other jacket with the green/purple?! stripes looked even worse. Well, it was the '70's...

Leisure suits. They where all the rage back in the 70's.

- What a nerd

I was too young to see Jaws on its original release
But saw it in theaters upon its re-release back in 1979

I wish I could go back to that simpler , bowl cut hairdoo , time

I wore the ever so cool, Tom Mcan gym shoes. My wardrobe style was the envy of.....well, nobody.

I also was too young to see it when it was released. I saw it in the theaters in '79 or '80. That was some scary shit for a kid...especially the surprise scene with Ben Gardner!

O pointy birds, o pointy pointy, anoint my head, anointy-nointy.

I also grew up in the late '70's/early '80's, and remember the clothes, bowl hair-cuts, etc. Definitely a bad era for fashion, which was reflected in the films from that time period. I definitely wouldn't be caught dead wearing anything like that now, though I still see some people wearing clothes like these today

IIRC, the first time I saw Jaws was a network TV showing, which obviously edited out all the "good" parts. I didn't see it in it's entirety until the regular DVD, years later.

Even in HD, I think the shark looks halfway decent (though still obviously fake). The initial scene when it comes out of the water is still fairly startling....

IMHO, this film features one of Robert Shaw's best roles. I like the scene when all of the townspeople are arguing about how best to handle the shark, and Shaw scratches the blackboard with his fingernails, thereby getting everyone's attention. It was ironic (though not unexpected) that Shaw's tough-as-nails/seen-it all fisherman character
[Show spoiler]was the one that got eaten by the shark & the other two survived; despite the fact that Shaw was the one guy who you thought would be most prepared for anything.

Awesome.

Movies like this was such a HUGE event at this time. A lot of people didn't even have VHS or Beta yet and when a movie like Jaws premiered on network TV.

Totally.

I would go through the TV Guide and circle what I wanted to watch that week
Although, being a kid still , there wasn't too much out there for me

I love my Jaws Blu-ray
I think it looks fantastic
Certainly the best looking copy I have ever owned
The extras are great too (even though one documentary is letterboxed)
And at $7.99 right now , it's a steal

I would also like to recommend :
"Inside Jaws" by Jamie Benning
You can watch it on Vimeo

Awesome..remember sitting up w/my brothers watching those. Vividly recall the first time I saw Ben Gardner's severed head. 3 boys almost jumped through the roof. Jaws still holds up amazingly well, and as mentioned previously it is the epitome of a Summer movie.

The shark only looks fake when its attacking Quint, but that was a full on close up in strongly lit conditions, so the shooting difficulty of that scene was always going to tell.

True - and, note that I never really noticed the fake-ness of the shark until this latest viewing: I.e., on a large HD set, and on Blu. In previous viewings (network TV & DVD, both on much smaller sets) the shark did not look as fake...

I wonder if there is any relation to a forthcoming blu ray release cause that would be great ... but Fios has all the Jaws movies available for rent or buy in HD right now & they are advertising it too.

*Crossing Fingers* !
You got a good reputation. But if I was you, I'd have located in the next county.

Blu Ray Wish List : Judgement Night, Memoirs Of An Invisible Man (1992), Things To Do In Denver When Your Dead, Phantasm 1, 3 & 4, The Incredible Hulk (TV Series), House (1986), Jaws 2 & 3, School Ties, V (TV Series, 1980's) & any Hip Hop on Blu Ray.

Speaking of Richard Dreyfuss, I used to live right by him and kept running into him. Ran into him at Chipotle even. He drives like a maniac. Almost ran right into me. Very impatient driver lol

The music in that scene gives me chills, especially when Gardner's boat comes into view.
