I got the UK version as well and that case is definitely a piece of crap. The slip is nice though.

Discs are what matters in the end.

I think he meant that the theatricals are the director cuts. The extended cut hack jobs were put together and released by the studio.

Yep.

The thicker case is crap.

The original release featured a thinner case.

Both releases came with a slipbox. Thick and thin types.

Yup, that's it. It's been a couple of years now & people are still going on about these bogus "directors cuts" I read somewhere that Richard Donner told Warner he would have nothing to do with this release unless they used his cuts of the film...the directors cuts. His commentary is very good, as is the interview with him & the cast. It's a great set.

Not sure if this is been mentioned at all, but I figure I'll get this out there - for anyone looking at the Australian version of this set for whatever reason, stay far away.

Warner totally cheaped out over here, and just threw in the old 2006 discs for LW1 and 2 along with the new LW3 and 4 discs. Fortunately, the back of the case does correctly list the inferior audio, so anyone informed would be able to work it out from a cursory glance.

Sadly though, I just assumed it'd be the same as the UK and US sets, so I picked it up thinking I was in the green.

Didn't realise what I was stuck with until I opened it. It's my own fault, but I am pretty bummed.

If you are a registered third party seller on Ebay or Amazon, you can resell it and get part of your money back. Then re-purchase the U.S or the UK release.

Yeah, not too much though unfortunately - unsealed copies of the Australian version go for pretty minor amounts at the end of the day.

It's really shitty when a studio puts old discs in a collection like that. Sorry man.

Something is better than nothing, and at least it won't be total loss.

You know for the most part I've only ever watched the films on those "Director's Cut" DVD editions (I think I watched the films on VHS before that at some point). I don't think most of the added footage added anything, but I would sorely miss that school shooter scene at the beginning of the first movie.

Eh, whatever 30 bucks for the set is pretty awesome, even though I don't really like the 3rd or 4th movie all that much.

I've heard people write about how much Donner hates these "director's cuts" for years. While I could understand that since I don't think the added scenes add anything, I always thought it was kinda weird that the director's cuts were mentioned to Donner during the "Lethal Weapon 4" audio commentary and he didn't give any indication that he was against them. Maybe he just didn't want to disparage a WB product while recording a commentary for another WB product. But when speaking of Traci Wolfe's absence in "Lethal Weapon 3" since her scene was deleted, another participant (I'm assuming it was Geoff Johns) reminded Donner that her scene was put back in Donner's director's cut (I am pretty sure he said "your director's cut" to Donner). Donner acknowledged it and moved on. He certainly didn't give any indication that he was bothered by the existence of the "director's cut". I also thought it was odd that WB would use the term "director's cut" without Donner's blessing. Studios typically would label discs that didn't have the director's involvement as "extended cuts". I remember when Sony was doing that for a bit and just edited the deleted scenes into the movie.

Director's cut is a marketing term now and doesn't mean much anymore. Ridley Scott talks about this on the Alien BD. And yes, I am sure Donner didn't want to complain about the studio on the commentary, director's very rarely do.

I'd be more worked up about the issue if I liked the director's cuts, but I never did. Glad to have the original cuts restored.
