The movie rose up to #2 yesterday with $750K. Scary Movie fell out of the top 3.

My thoughts:

Quote:
I thought it was a horrendous idea when they first announced they were going to remake The Evil Dead. Bear in mind that the original is my favourite horror film (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a close second), so a remake was never going to win me over immediately. It got worse, too. Diablo Cody writing? Drug addiction driving the narrative? I wasn’t overly impressed with the first trailer, either. Fortunately, with more footage and reports from folks who visited the set, my expectations spiked dramatically. I took my girlfriend to see the film today and I really enjoyed it.

As good as the original? I don’t think so, no, but then I was hardly surprised by this and I appreciated it on its own merits. Having said that, I did like the various references to the first film and you could tell that it was directed by somebody with an appreciation for Sam Raimi’s series, as opposed to just slapping together a remake for a quick buck. The characters were more interesting than I expected them to be (with the exception of Natalie, who was a non-entity for much of the film), the practical effects were very good and the film was a relentless joyride of blood and severed limbs from start to finish. I’m genuinely surprised to see that this was granted an R rating in America. I wonder what was cut to avoid the dreaded NC-17.

I did have some minor issues with the film (too much exposition at the beginning, lapses into modern horror cliches and a rubbish post-credits ending), but when you’re watching an Evil Dead film, I think an Oscar-winner is the last thing on your mind - you’re expecting much in the way of style and gruesome antics. This film definitely delivered in that regard. I’m looking forward to the Blu-ray release (particularly because I’m curious as to what the uncut version contains) and to the inevitable sequel.

I can only imagine the fairly hardcore gore is responsible for this one getting a pass from so many geeks. For me it wasn't any better than any of the last decade's wretched remakes (HALLOWEEN, TEXAS CHAINSAW, NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST, THE FOG, THE THING etc).

I guess if it was one of your first horror movies you might be impressed but I found it completely devoid of any atmosphere and wasn't even remotely chilled by any of it. The "characters" were horribly unappealing and not even attractive enough to make up for their sheer lack of charisma: what was with the guy who looked like he'd wandered out of an amdram production of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR?

With no semblance of tension, all you could do was wait for the next gory effect. The fact that they were mostly practical was nice but I felt like I was watching a makeup FX demo. The complete absence of humour made the whole thing just ridiculous - in a bad way. Cliched, inept garbage.

The Texas Chainsaw remake was great, IMO. There were characters you actually cared about and the cinematography was superb. I enjoy it much more than the original.

The 2003 one was horrid, empty and lame.
Nothing can touch the original.

The Texas Chainsaw remake is among my favorite horror films of all time Brutal and extremely atmospheric. Not sure why it has so many detractors

I also thought this 'Evil Dead' remake was quite good! I give it a 4/5. Can't wait to rewatch it when its released on blu. I love me some Jane Levy

Finally got around to seeing this. Not as good as I expected, but it was still a fun and very entertaining film.

My same feels on both films.
I really enjoyed the Evil Dead remake. They took the series into a more series direction. The only reason I'm not giving it a 5 is for the occasional bad line, mostly coming from the main possessed. I just shook it off and filed it in my brain under "Things to Expect from Evil Dead," but it still should have just been left out.

My main feeling on the film was kind of the same for Insidious. I thought it was a fantastic movie, but at the end, they showed a little too much.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
