I'd say he has turned almost certain failure into a victory. Basically the Live Action will be converted and the CGI Monster/Robot Action will be rendered 3D,which sounds just about perfect to me.

I think this being 3D is a huge step for 3D generally and just shows that 3D is a viable business model.
3D is here to stay,get used to it.
