The music track is only on the original 1998 DVD edition of The Thing It is an audio option while watching the Making of Doc. On the re-issue DVD they omitted it.

But I just checked dvdcompare and it says this at the end (but doesn't list the music only track anywhere but here), saying the anamorphic re-issue is best:
"The new remastered R1 CE (note, that the old release is using the same "CE" title) is the winner, with improved audio and an anamorphic transfer. It loses the "Isolated Score" though from the old release. Both R1 CE releases have two exclusive short extras."

I'll check my dvd to see if the music track is there, I still have the old 4X3 one.

EDIT: dvdcompare is wrong, there is no music track on the old dvd either. There is 5.1 English, 2.0 French and 2.0 commentary are the only audio tracks. Maybe the laserdisc had it? Looking like no dvd does.
The isolated score on the non-anamorphic disc is with the Terror Takes Shape documentary, NOT the main movie. If you go to the documentary in the menu, then check the language selection for it, you'll find listed English and Music Score. It does actually say this in the DVD Compare listing too: '"John Carpenter's The Thing: Terror Takes Shape" documentary (83:56 with Optional Isolated Score in Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo)'.

I can't find it on the UK edition, on the documentary "John Carpenter's The Thing: Terror Takes Shape" screen there's no option for language selection, just Play and Chapter List, that's the non-anamorphic version. We didn't get the feature on our UK DVDs?

Correct. Just to make it more confusing, they removed the feature from the UK non-ana DVD.

Times like this, I really wonder if the home video release departments are hostile to consumers. Like, my VHS of Peter Weir's THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY has a very nice 2.0 Dolby Surround soundtrack. The DVD was labeled for having a Stereo mix, but it's mono (2.0 mono if I recall). I think it's 2.0 stereo on streaming. No BD release in the US at all.

Le sigh. It's not like Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver and (cough) Linda Hunt in the role she got an Oscar for (cough) are not worth carrying on in your catalog.

Confirmed, the slipcase + digipak CE (screaming wax guy), there's only one audio track to "Terror Takes Shape." Wonder if my old dvd player would find something hidden....

It was only an option for the 1998 U.S. DVD release. They didn't include it on the digipack edition.

I've reworded the overall at dvdcompare to be less confusing.

This explains why I didn't see it, and maybe why it's not listed on dvdprofiler either. So the isolated score only plays over the doc? That's a bit silly IMO, but at least it's there.

Considering that half of the score isn't even used in the movie (and the half that is is cut up and distributed around the movie with little adherence to where it was originally spotted), I don't see why this would be a problem. I own the soundtrack CD anyways, so the loss of the score under the documentary doesn't mean much to me.

Time for a 4K remaster of this mess. And I have a feeling it's in the works as we type.

A brand new 2K scan without EE, DNR and other bullshit would suffice. I want this Thing on my shelf.

Agreed, I would be very satsified with that. There have been some nice new 2K scans in the last couple of years on Carpenter movies.

We sort of got that with the HD DVD. It does have some minor EE, but it doesn't have the DNR that plagues the BD.
