I picked it up and couldn't get into it at first. After an hour I got into the groove and the stealth nature of the game appeas to me once more.

While I didn't feel this way myself, I can certainly understand those that say the game took a while to get into. Act 1 did seem slow, but I'm enough of a fan that it didn't frazzle me. Really picks up in Act 2, and if you don't love it after the first boss fight, then it really isn't for you. Most negative reviews I have seen are from those that did not make it even to the first boss.
Definately purchase this one, if you don't like it, give it a bit more time. But I'm almost certain it will be worth it.
HD DVD is that roadkill you see every car run over on the highway...so disfigured, you can't even identify what it was anymore.

Plenty. Try Gametrailers.com or IGN. I can't access any of the good ones at work, but I'm certain someone else will post some good vids. Additionally, the cutscenes are done using the in-game engine, so that should give you an idea on how it looks. As for actual "gameplay", there are videos of that too.

I don't know if it's been taken down, but there was a video housed on the PSN network with Kojima playing a 15 minute walkthrough of the game. I watched that video over and over for months until the game came out and deleted it when I picked up my pre-order. If it's not on the PSN network anymore, I'd suggest trying gametrailers or Youtube.
All cutscenes are done using the in-game engine, so transitions to you controlling are seamless. It is as good as it looks in commercials, and it does exceed my expectations. I now own around 28 PS3 games or so, and pretty much everything with the exception of Rock Band have been back burnered in favor of MGS4. It plays like crack, and I don't want rehab. I got this.

I am half way through - waiting for my surround system to finish it. I am disappointed at the gameplay to cut scene ratio. So far over half the game is cut scenes. Just when I get into a cool mission I am distracted by 30m-1h cut scene almost every time.

Its a good game for sure , a bit overhyped , but entertaining. Stealth games are'nt my cup of tea but this one has kept me pretty entertained. Definatly the best looking cut scenes I have seen in any game , in game graphics are no slouch either. For me this games about 8.5/10

MGS4 is pretty much the only game on PS3 that even remotely touches on it's truly superior hardware. And, I emphasize 'touches on' because it can still do a whole helluva lot more.
If there was only one game I could get for PS3, it would be MGS4 hands down and without question as it is the only truly 'next gen' title out there really.
Tell movies studios you DO NOT WANT UltraViolet. Tell them you want real digital copies that you can actually USE. Tell them to go back to the ease of use and convenience of iTunes.

But game and cutscenes are epic and worth your time... Just note, you have to have a little bit of time when playing if you want to see all the cutscenes...Don't think you can just play for 5 min...won't happen |

If someone wanted to start the Metal Gear series would 4 be okay to start at? I know the die hard fans will say start at number 1, but I dont have time to go all the way back. Any suggestions where to start?

I have never played a MGS game before (not even the first, even though I used to own a Playstation One), and I absolutely think that MGS4 is one of the best games I have played this generation bar none.
To me this gen has been defined by: Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PC) Uncharted 2 Valkyria Chronicles Metal Gear Solid 4 Flower (still have to try Journey, a shame hehe) Skyrim (PC) Wipeout HD/ Fury Guild Wars 2 (PC)
Most awaited:
The Hobbit - 12/14/12, 12/13/13 & 7/18/14 Oz The Great and Powerful - March 8th 2013 Elysium - August 9th 2013 Pacific Rim - Juy 12th 2013 |

it is worth it! but to be honest, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first 2 MGS games (never got around to play 3, I only played it once for a little bit)
the problem with 4 is the cutscenes.. if I remember correctly, it's 60% or 70% cutscenes and it's strongest points (imo) are the references to MGS 1 and how stunning it looks |

Having said that, yes I think you can play 4 without any other MGS game because there are a lot of flashbacks and references. Some will go over your head, but not everything as long as you pay attention. However, I would consider Snake Eater if you had the time. |

I had MGS2 before MGS4, but I didn't play much, so in a way MGS4 is my first MGS. It helps if you download the MGS database off the PStore which will fill you in on the details.
