If I go into the player's settings while the disc is running it's saying the subtitles are already off hence why I assumed that that bit was forced, but clearly this varies across players. I've got a Panasonic 310.
I just pressed the subtitle button on the remote once the movie started, and there is an off option listed, which I selected changing it from the Japanese subtitle option 1 which is the preset.

That's the thing, it already says off when I check the subtitles as the disc is playing. BUT I had already selected the second subtitle option (which I thought was off, but it must be a selected-captions-only track) from the disc menu before playing it, so I'll try playing it with the full subtitle track running first of all and then turn them off manually using the remote. I think that'll do it, thanks for the heads-up Cevo.

Resolution is nothing without propper compression.
But 4k is the magic fix all, to all video problems ever.

Just to confirm: Cevolution is 100% right regarding the subs, you can turn them off FULLY once the movie starts instead of picking one or the other in the disc menu (the second option, which I thought was off, appears to be forced place captions instead). So just play the movie on default settings, turn off the subs with player remote rather than in the disc menu and you're good to go. Good catch!

Just to expand on that Geoff D, the disc features 2 Japanese subtitle streams:

Presentation Graphics: Japanese 53.048 kbps
Presentation Graphics: Japanese 0.096 kbps
The second one, is the one with the translation. I'd assume it's like the translations in The Lord of the Rings BDs, you're not meant (or don't always have the option) to turn them off from the menu, but you can deactivate them (usually by accident) by cycling with your remote.

I know that now. I assumed that the second option in the menu was off, when it's actually the place captions. But the heck of it is, I've just played it again (interrupting EFNY) with the second option in the disc menu selected and now the caption doesn't come up at all. Whatever.

Bottom line is, no forced subs! Me wrong. Me bad.

Oh, and folks shouldn't be put off by the single-layer encode, the grain is so ultra-fine there's no problem with the compression. The image has got so much organic texture, it's about as far from video as I could ever imagine Blu-ray looking. I just hope they'll level out the skin tones a bit more for the US release. (I wonder if the 4K version on 4K Unlimited has the same issues?)

Watching this yesterday, I did a double-take when I saw the just-married kid ("Wrestlemania!!") because I never knew it was Michael Shannon.

I believe Caps-a-holic posted comparison shots for people to see. Once it was mention that it was affordable through CDJapan most of us jumped.

I can confirm that by manually turning all subtitle tracks off, there are no forced subs.
