I'm still using a 22" Acer p221w desktop LCD from about 5 years ago. It was like $300 back then, but it appears the going rate for 24" or so screens can now be had for around $200 or 27" from $300 and up. Think I should upgrade to full 1080p? And are the monitors of the last few years a reasonable upgrade in color accuracy, contrast, offset viewing, and overall reliability? If so, looking for recommendations on a solid 24" or 27". Also curious of the solid Black Friday deals.
PC, Win7 use. Specs of mine: http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors...-32569188.html Last edited by meremortal; 11-07-2012 at 03:17 PM. |

I'm interested to hear about some of the recommendations to follow as well. My trusty 5-yr old Acer Ferrari F-20 monitor is on its last legs, and I'm going to need a new one very, very soon. My problem is that I only have 22.5" in width to play with.

There have definitely been some progressions in the last few years, especially in the availability of IPS panels.
Dell makes some pretty good ones (the only thing they are good at). Their Ultrasharp series are considered one of the best series of IPS panel displays. They have great specs and a matte finish. Dell's new S series of monitors are what I am really tempted to get. They are IPS panel displays with edge-to-edge glass, so the glossy alternative to the matte Ultrasharp line. The only exception that I would stay away from is for some reason the 24" (Dell S2440L) does not use a IPS panel and instead uses a TN panel. ASUS also makes some great displays including IPS panels and TN panels. The trade-off is that IPS panels give color accuracy (media watching, audio/video work, art fields) while TN panels usually can have a higher response time (gaming). Last note, check the connectors. HDMI has become pretty common, but sometimes replaces DVI, while most GPUs still only use DVI or mini-HDMI so converters may be needed.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...009&CatId=2775 I have a 27" now and I'd much rather have a sharper image and 2 monitors than to have one huge one taking up my desktop space. I like that one from dell that has 2560x1440 though. That would be good if you can read the text ok at that high resolution. |

That LG for $199 sounds promising. Anyone have any feedback on it? I'd love to go 27" for that price, although I'm not much familiar with their brand. Or should I stick to smaller size with IPS? Mainly watch Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, and such. Also gaming, though not always the most current of hi-spec ones out there.

John, MemoryExpress has some monitors on sale until the 13th. You could possibly get two for the price of one on some of the models. However, they are TN panels instead of IPS.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD and scroll down to "types" if you want to learn about different panel types, mainly TN and IPS.

Been looking at that 23" DELL you posted and it would be a tight fit, but I think I might go with that. One question though...I didn't notice a HDMI input? Should that be a concern?

Depends what you are hooking it to i guess, It has DVI VGA and DP. DVI or DP would be the best choices.
