Universal Soldier 1 was great.
There's heart in the movie and you can tell they tried to make something special but it really makes little-to-no sense at all, story-wise. It only has tenuous connections to US and US Regeneration and feels a lot like some bizarre fanboy porn. Though that's not saying much given the wacky history of the franchise. US 1 had a solid premise and US 2 and US 3 were logical - if terribly executed due to low budgets that were supposed to lead to a US TV show - continuations of that. Then we got US: The Return - a sequel to US that replaces the two TV movies -, which originally had Van Damme returning as a re-zombiefied UniSol in the original script and early production shoots before they switched Luc back to a human being with a kid, no less, and US: Regeneration, which only vaguely connects to US 1 and ignores all the others. Because the franchise has been through so many rightsholders and writers, there's just no consistency or strong story threads, which brings us to the current state of the franchise where it's a "re-interpretation". It just makes no sense.

Thanks for the info. This helps.

I saw it in Target for 19.99 for the plain DVD, but they didn't even have a blu ray choice in store.

I held off, as I would want the 3D version. How is the 3D Sookymonster? Weak, medium, strong, a combination?

3d is med. to strong. Nothing like the fight scenes in this one along with some close up 3d blood flying everywhere! I loved it.....Not for evryone thats for sure. Almost like watching Terminator with Arnold(the first one, low budget but it somehow works).

I remember seeing a little bit of the 3d trailer on youtube and I thought the 3d looked very strong! It confounds me why Sony is not putting forth a 3d version of one of their movies again. First Resident Evil Damnation, and then this :/

Im still yet to watch it, but will post my impressions as soon as I get through it.

The movie is in 2:40 ratio and the scene I watched was reasonably strong in the 3d and the gore..

Where did you buy it from?
There simply is no other place on the internet. Blu-ray.com

Hey mate, the J card says region B only on it. I'll check for you if that is true, as my player is all regions.

Just watched the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. Not as good as Regeneration, but really good for what it is nonetheless. Some fantastic fight scenes particularly a faux one take fight sequence towards the end. The 3D was really good throughout, with some wonderful low angles in buildings, creating a great sense of space with the ceiling in the background. I would rate this as very solid 3D with a good sense of dimensions and plenty of depth to the image. There are some instances where characters faces are right in the centre of the screen and poking right out. Particularly Van Damme's nose in one scene near the beginning lol.

John Hyams deserves to get some bigger budgets, he's a really good action director. I'm a big Scott Adkins fan too, would love to see him get some more high profile action roles.

Just finished watching this one. Thought the depth was quite good and some of the 3D, such as facial close-ups looked phenomenal. Film was rather average though.
<<<<Also have 7500+ dvds not added to my collection. Decided it was a losing battle. Also have several hundred blu-rays to add but only adding when watched as a rule of thumb.

Sorry for bumping this one back up guys. Has anyone from the US bought the German import, which includes the NC-17 cut? If so, is it region free, and does the 3D work on a US TV?

3D was ok but the movie itself was godawful. I didn't make it to the end.
