The discs themselves look exactly the same as the original extended edition DVD's, except with the Blu-ray logo instead of the DVD logo.

Any word yet on whether these will ever be available outside of Target, or if Target will re-stock them?

Well, I guess I'll answer my own question, in case anyone else is interested. All three are in stock now at my local Target, and are on sale for $10 each through March 30! They are not in the regular DVD/Blu-ray section of the store, but up near the registers. Aside from a shelf tag, there's nothing to call attention to them--they are not even particularly close to the shelves containing The Hobbit. I picked them up and, as suggested by many in this thread more clever than I, am swapping out the discs with their counterparts in the DVD extended sets with the fancy packaging.

If you don't plan on holding onto the dvds, definitely do something like DVD2Blu.

I pulled the trigger on all three of these at Target across the street for $10 apiece tonight. (After reading the heads-up in this thread. Thanks, y'all.)

I've been waiting for the three Extended Editions to sell for $30 or so for a long time, and I sold my old Extended Edition DVD sets in anticipation of buying the Blu-rays someday.

I never took the time to watch any of the Special Feature Documentaries on the DVD box set back in the day, so I do not need any of the Special Feature Documentaries with the Blu-ray purchases. The commentaries are all there, though. I may never bother watching the commentaries, but it's cool that they're present.

Truth be told, it'll probably be a while before I get around to watching these. Back in the day (early 2000s), I watched my Extended Edition DVDs over and over for years until I finally became sick of them. Even now, eight or nine years later, I'm still suffering from that "Middle Earth Hangover" and am not in a huge hurry to revisit these flicks. I know, however, that I'm going to get into the mood for this trilogy at some point, and that these Extended Edition Blu-rays will be rocking my world when that happens.

Be aware that these stand-alone Blu-rays are the bare minimum. Discs 1 and 2, only, and just the movies themselves.
That's all I have ever needed, though. The Amaray cases are cool, the cover art for these three is pretty awesome with the uniform look, and there's no clunky box set. I like this.

If you are going to do this, then you should hurry up and do so before President Obama pushes legislation against it through the House and Senate.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

That seems like a cool idea to me. If you like the steelbooks, you'll get the best of both worlds with the packaging and the films themselves.
$10 per Extended Edition is a win, no matter how you place these in the collection.

What I just thought would be even cooler is if I could alter the steelbook to hold both discs.

I'll confirm that these stand-alone Extended Edition Blu-rays were found at the front register section at my Target as well, instead of being located in the Movies section. There is a discount Blu-ray/DVD display at the end of one of the registers where they usually keep the Easter candy and such. These Blu-rays were located on the lower shelves of the display with no attention called out to them. The "new release" Blu-ray display with The Hobbit was located a few registers down.

I checked two Targets in my area and neither had the blu-rays. I guess they're officially gone? Anyone think there's a chance of them returning?

Sorry to hear that. Look for them around the time that the next installment of The Hobbit comes out in theaters and out on Blu-ray.

I found all three of them at a local record store that sells used Blu-rays! I paid $15 for Fellowship and will return for the other two this week (after I graduate from college ) Not sure why I'm updating this thread with this news but oh well I was psyched!

I love the artwork on the standalone releases, I've seriously considered double dipping to have separates.
