I have the BB versionand it has the macro blocking issues.

Especially noticeable on the fade up from black after the Kremlin explosion to Ethan waking up in the hospital and in the red carpet while they are using the video screen to conceal themselves in the hallway.
Hey Chiefy, next time you just ask me which line to pull.

That isn't necessarily dust.

Maybe the film scanner was dirty. The fact remains that the transfer is flawed.

I even noticed stuff as soon as the prison scene with Ethan at the beginning.

Possibly... but I would put more money on it being a combination of factors (player, display type, transfer bordering on error tolerance, etc). I do not see any macro blocking on my copy (BB) either, and have been scouring the scenes mentioned here frame-by-frame. Granted, I do not have a 105" front projection system, but many here are saying that it is not subtle even on a 42" display - I have a 65" plasma - and I see nothing out of the ordinary...

It's film. Film has flaws. It's analog. It's not going to be perfect.

Those white specks are artefacts left over from the DI (it's dirt on the scanned negative which translates to a white mark on positive images) and they've got nothing to do with how the movie was transferred onto Blu-ray, because that's a completely digital process.

It's the norm for film-based stuff finished digitally, there will always be a sprinkling of dirt that gets through (visible even in digital theatrical presentations). And I'd rather that the people preparing the subsequent Blu-rays DON'T get to run another dirt removal pass on it, because when you give that sort of power to the mooks at Paramount and Univeral they will endeavour to **** it up royally.

So, some see the errors on the BB edition, while others don't?
Whom can we believe?

I have the BB version and my copy does not exhibit the macroblocking issues but various people reported to observing them when it was first released.

Currently rewatching the disc right now on my 60" VT60 and have not observed any issues.

The culprit for the problems were never nailed down as far as I recall.

Best regards,
KvE
