I was lucky, or unlucky as the case may be. I got it from Amazon on preorder. I got it with the outer sleeve but the case was broken. I got a replacement. It came without a sleeve and had the 'our bad' sticker. I simply kept the new version and kept the sleeve, returning the one I originally got damaged. So in the end, I got the corrected versions, and the sleeve. I hate getting damaged stuff, but in the end, I benefited. Still think they should have dealt with this before they got released. It caused a lot of people major headaches.

I had to lower the brightness of my TV down by 5 notches to crush the image enough so that the blues turned black. (In case anyone asks, my TV has been properly calibrated and I triple-checked the settings to make sure they hadn't been ****ed with.)

This is the UK version and not the US one admittedly, but in this cap from the US review you can see exactly what I'm talking about: look at the rims of the car or the background of the shot, details just pop out of nowhere instead of gradually fading out of the darker part of the image. It's not just this shot either, any dark scene in the whole movie suffers from this issue.

Edit: Ah, I see this was actually mentioned in the review. The image quality has enough to contend with already (as has been mentioned several times, the entire movie is virtually one big optical), without that horrible gamma problem. I found it to be incredibly distracting, hence changing the brightness as a short-term solution, because the movie's just too good to leave on the sidelines no matter how hinky the transfer is.
I see what you mean in that screenshot. The blacks definitely have that bluish look, and as you said, the details just "appear", rather than fade in gradually from the darkness. That's a shame. Still a nice transfer, but that really shouldn't have happened. Doesn't anybody at these studios pay attention to image quality any more?

That is cool though that you got it with the replacement disc inside of it. I got mine sometime after it come out so my DVD (though I haven't played yet) is likely the Full Screen version thought it says 16:9 aspect ratio. I may have to test it out to see if it is or it isn't.

I think you're mistaken about the blacks, I checked with the eyedropper tool in photoshop and it seems like whenever I clicked on any black-looking background area, it always showed up as RGB value 0,0,0.

I'm checking the same shot in photoshop and clicking on any 'black-looking background area', and I'm getting varying levels of colour. The only black 0,0,0 sample I can find is in the borders top and bottom. The black level is screwed in WFRR, the gamma needs to be much higher.

Edit: Well, I dunno about 'much higher', as simply changing the gamma from 1.0 to 1.25 (this being relative to photoshop values) crushes down the blacks just enough to look a lot more respectable, and it's not absorbing shadow detail because there's hardly any to lose! (Look at the tyre on the left, for example).

My mistake, for some reason my "color picker" box defaults to "only web colors" being checked whenever I re-open it, I have to un-check the box to see the full gradations of color. Clicking a few black-looking points near the "Hollywoodland" sign, the first 5 RGB values I got were (4,4,12), (2,5,12), (8,7,12), (7,6,12) and (4,5,10). So definitely a bias towards blue, though I think on a well-calibrated monitor most people would have trouble distinguishing such small values from true black (or from blacks with equally small biases to green or red)--for those who aren't familiar, the RGB scale goes from 0 to 255 for each color.

Hell with a well-calibrated monitor, I can clearly see the purple-blue 'blacks' on my well-calibrated TV, and that's with the gamma already set at 2.4 as opposed to the lighter 2.2. The gamma's as high as I can get it using that particular setting, which is why I then had to resort to a crude brightness adjustment to get WFRR looking tolerable.

Still, with several comments from people not being able to see the classic shot of Michael Myers appearing out of the gloom in Halloween - i.e. their screens are crushing waaaaaay too much shadow detail - it's no surprise that there hasn't been more fuss made about the fubar blacks in WFRR.

I was specifically thinking of how that screenshot looks on a computer monitor, I don't know how close of a match it would be for how the same shot of the blu ray looks on a well-calibrated HDTV. Small differences in RGB color values, especially on the dark end of the spectrum, seem difficult to make out on a monitor, at least for me. But maybe my computer monitor isn't as good as it could be, or maybe I'm not that good at distinguishing colors, I don't know. Here, I made three swatches of near-black, each of which has just slightly more of one of the RGB colors--just eyeballing them, and without spending too much time looking, can you easily tell the color bias of each one?

(edit: actually, I looked at this again on my laptop, and the one that's more blue seems a little easier to distinguish--maybe my main computer monitor isn't that good with color)

Yep. On my laptop screen the blue one looks a little easier to pick out than the other two, is it the same for you? The RGB value was 10,10,15.

This is $10.99 on Amazon. I won't buy it there because of the shipping. Anyone see this in stores lately? My Target has the dvd/blu-ray version. I want the blu-ray/dvd version.

My Best Buy and Target did not have any copies, but I managed to get one at Fry's.

Nearly bit on the Amazon deal, but I found it on the Target shelf for $14.99 while scoring Jungle Book and Wreck-It Ralph for $13 each earlier this week. Since I haven't had Prime for a couple years, the shipping costs made the price difference a virtual wash. It was in the DVD packaging, but so is my Dumbo--I'm not OCD about such things. = )

I'd never buy a censored version of this film, Kiss my ass Disney. Like those things were that bad and most were not even noticeable. What, Are they afraid some nobody will b#tch? Who cares. Damn. Hell, Most kids nowadays watch porn on a daily basis... This movie's "Dirty jokes" are not that bad.
