Just how a local chain of video stores would have gotten a 'different' copy though, I have no idea...

I remember buying the Dark Horse Comic set just to show my neighbors who couldn't figure out what the Hell I was talking about. In later years, I always wished I had just gone back and rented it from the same store, 'forgetting' to ever return it. I'm sure my Dad would've bee thrilled with the bill, lol. I still think the initial price-point of VHS tapes was really high at this time. (At least right at release.)

Not sure it helps, but at least you're not crazy...
I loved that 3-part comic adaptation when I was a kid (still have it) and I was always puzzled as to why so much of it didn't end up in the movie. I didn't see it theatrically (I was only 12) but watched it a bunch of times on VHS and the theatrical cut was as it's always been.

I'll always have a soft spot for Alien³, and although I dig the workprint it's just a bit too choppy at key moments for me to really get into it. Still, I said the same thing about the unrated Die Hard 4 and I ****ing loved it when I watched it again recently, so I think it's high time I gave the extended Alien³ another viewing.

I think I'll go on an 'alternate cut' run of all three movies, i.e. the ones I wouldn't normally watch, so that'd be Alien: DC, Aliens: SE (any excuse to watch that extraordinary BD again is fine by me!) and then the extended Alien³.

No need to feel humble about it.
