As StingingVelvet said, the ball is there. You don't even notice it missing unless you probably pause it to the right frame.
Just because you didn't notice something that is supposed to be visible is missing from some frames in the movie doesn't mean it's not a huge problem. It's supposed to be visible. That is proof positive that this transfer has something wrong with it, whether you think it's good or not.

But a ball missing from a single frame that your eyes can't even pick up is not a problem.

True, but the fact that it's missing at all regardless of how insignificant it appears in isolation, is just proof that in the grand scheme of things the amount of DNR applied to the transfer on BD is too much.

Indeed.

Again, the truth is in the middle. It had too much DNR applied for sure, but it's not some horrible mess to look at either. I'm not going to hook up an HD-DVD player in 2014, and it's a lot better looking than a DVD or download. It is what it is.

If you have an Xbox 360, the attachment HD-DVD player for it costs like 75 cents these days. And it's about three times as narrow as an ordinary stand alone player so it doesn't take up much space.

I bought one pretty much exclusively for The Thing after I've seen those caps-a-holic comparisons. And for Midnight Run. There are also other Universal titles that are clearly superior on HD-DVD, for whatever reason. Perhaps most notably Apollo 13:

http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleich...ss=1#vergleich

I've also learned that the HD-DVD version of Casino is slightly superior the the blu ray version. And let's not forget the juggernaut releases from Magnolia Pictures that everyone owns, such as Steven Soderbergh's masterpiece Bubble, which is a MPEG2 transfer on a BD25, but an AVC on a HD-DVD30.

I am pretty sure that there are several Paramount releases that are superior on HD-DVD, I hope that caps-a-holic provides the comparisons eventually.

Last year I was thinking of getting one of these and couldn't find one. When I did find one at a pawn shop, they wanted 75 dollars for it! Suffice to say, I am still BD only for HD. Not worth it for a couple titles, one of which I got from Canada on blu anyway (Slither), and that doesn't include the Xbox itself I would still have to buy.

I would honestly just wait until a superior blu ray resurfaces, lads. No point getting an X-Box and all that bollocks just to play the non dnr version.

I'm thinking at point it isn't happening, at least in the blu-ray era. Maybe 4K?

Yeah, best chance for re-releases on major catalog like this is probably 4K IMO. Even if Shout gets their hands on it to add to their John Carpenter catalog, it will probably be the same dated source as the blu-ray (and Shout has their own issues with compression anyway). The only chance of something significantly new is 4K format. But it might take a very long time to get to this one, especially if the major studios don't really get into catalog.

We realistically might have to wait additional years for the niche labels to start moving into 4K releases.

One things certain - the missing objects (such as snow for example) significantly prove that the blu-ray is NOT a better presentation of the film. That is an obvious fact backed up by clear unequivocal proof. Only a complete madman would attempt to argue otherwise.

Hasn't The Thing been one of those titles that Universal always seems to crank out first when a new format arrives? If Universal releases any catalog titles on 4K, maybe this will make the cut.

Yeah, it's the kind of genre film that sells well early in a format's life. I also wouldn't completely toss out the possibility of an SE at some point. Carpenter fans buy discs in droves.

As long as it's got a slipcover, sure they do.
