Since updating the firmware (2.60), my PS3 (og. 80g) no longer can fully load certain blu-ray titles. I've tested all 121 of the discs I own and have found that the problem is isolated to 17 titles from the studios Universal and Paramount. The discs are recognized in the XMB and will start loading but they hang before going to the initial screen. You'll see the little loading icon and then the screen goes black. You can hit the display button and see that it says it's on "Title 1" but you can't skip or ff or any other functions but stop playback. I've tried rebooting the system and turning off internet access, but that hasn't solved the problem. The titles played fine before the update, so I'm not sure what else could be causing the problem. Given it's isolated to these two studios, it sounds like a decryption issue. Maybe something in the firmware upgrade screwed up the keys to decrypt these titles? Below is a list of the problem titles.
Universal (these are all the Universal title I own, so none work): Heroes S1 Heroes S2 King Kong The Incredible Hulk The Hulk Wanted Hellboy II The Thing Land of the Dead The 40 Year Old Virgin Serenity Paramount (a few Paramount titles I own still load fine, these don't): The Godfather Event Horizon Cloverfield Beowulf Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Iron Man The problem is identical in all of them except in King Kong where it lets you select which version you want to watch and then hangs after that on "Title 25". I would appreciate any help or insight into this issue. I've searched the web and haven't been able to find anything on this yet, so maybe it's just my system. I've got an email in to Sony about this too. Thanks for your time. |

I just tested Wanted, Indiana Jones and Incredible Hulk. All plays fine. Just curious what PS3 verison do you have? And could it be your lense may be damage?

Thanks for checking your system. I've got the 80gig that came with Motor Storm and has limited backward compatibility with PS2. The reason I don't think it's the lense is because everything else plays fine. It's just those particular titles that start up then hang. For example, when it's loading Indiana Jones, it gets to the screen where you see an animated white silhouette of Indy cracking his whip, then it just goes black and hangs on "Title 1" (seen when you hit "display" on the remote). I've got another player that hangs like that when loading on some movies but it only lasts a few minutes at most where this just hangs indefinitely. That and the fact it's only on titles from those two studios makes me think it has to do with decryption.

I thought I should update this in case anyone else ever has this problem and searches out this thread for answers. So I finally figured out a solution to the problem I was having with these discs. Apparently these discs don't like it when you have all 4 usb ports occupied with external drives at the same time you're trying to play these particular blu-rays. When I un-plug one of the drives, these discs start up fine. If I plug in a 4th drive after the disc has loaded and while it is playing, a message pops up that says: "You have reached the limit on the number of storage media devices. Remove a storage media device to continue." I had never seen that message before. All my other discs play fine even with 4 drives attached. It's an odd quirk, but probably something most won't encounter and at least the solution is simple. I'm so glad nothing is wrong with my machine. Thanks to everyone that offered their insight.

this isn't directly on point to the OP but wanted to share it:
This problem is minor but has happened with several Universal BD's on my PS3. here is the sequence of events: 1. I'm watching New Universal BD on my PS3 2. I hit Pause 3. I leave room (for few minutes) 4. The big blue Universal logo comes up on the screen 5. I come back to the room, hit the Triangle button to bring up the menu 6. I cannot hit "play" to resume the movie!!! (it won't let me) After a while, I've figured out the only button on the menu options to re-play the movie is the "pop up menu" button!! Then the movie replays at the pause point Just really really weird. Not sure why i can't hit "play" to re-play it when its paused, and have to hit "pop up menu" to replay it. Not sure if its a System Update issue or not, but anyway, just wanted to let anyone else know who has a PS3 and watching new Universal disks in case this comes up... |

I used to have loading issues but that stopped when I turned off the 'Auto-Sign-on' for BD Live. Once I set that to NO or OFF (I forget which) in the main menu on the PS3, I been good to go every time. The system lagged when it tried to connect to BD Live every time. Try that.

the very same thing happened to me this weekend, on discs that worked PERFECT BEFORE the upgrade that has the RED PS3 screen wave.
My Paramount blu's Star Trek, Forrest Gump, CSI season 1 - ALL discs - just Spin Spin Spin and the player STOPS, doesn't even try to load. I do think it's maybe a paramount codec ? or BD live for sure. I'm gonna try Dave's test tomorrow and HOPE that works - I HATE BDLive - it's so useless. Just stick the supplementary material back on the disc please.
All the best,

Anyone still having this problem? I've run across it recently, where my Adjustment Bureau took over 10 minutes to load up the menu. None of the Jurassic Parks work either.
Tried Bridesmaids, all the previews play fine and then just black screen, no menu, no movie, nothing. Catfish - just a black screen, not even the Universal load logo. What the eff, Universal? EDIT - I logged online into the PSN and they all work fine now?!?!? So I have to be online to watch an Universal movie now, what's up with that?
