Excellent! Shame about the censored bits but releasing the R-rated fullscreen VHS as a bonus is very welcome.

Very happy this is being re-released. Up there with JAWS & ALLIGATOR, IMO.

Thumbs up

Excellent news. Never imported the previous interlaced release and will be getting this one for sure. Great score by Iva Davies, hopefully some of the extras will give a shootout!

Wouldn't be the first time a disc was marked as 1080p and turned out to be 50i. But fingers crossed.

I spoke with Umbrella when the previous release was 50i, and that was a pretty extensive restoration as well. The woman I spoke with wasn't completely up with the technology, but she said the reason for it was that they only had access to a 25fps source. So who knows what this new one has been derived from, but I sincerely hope it's not the same 25 fps source, because a down-conversion is no better, certainly pitch-wise, than a PAL speed-up.

Yep. See The Dish. Roadshow slapped a standard def PAL source onto a 1080p BD and man, it was ugly.

Damn I wish I hadn't bothered importing the 1080i edition now!
Blu Ray Most Wanted: After Hours (Scorsese), Bringing Out the Dead (Scorsese), Femme Fatale (De Palma), Panic Room (Fincher), The Tenant (Polanski), Something Wicked This Way Comes (Jack Clayton), Someone to Watch Over Me (Ridley Scott), The Hitcher (Robert Harmon), The Parallax View (Alan J. Pakula), Young Sherlock Holmes (Barry Levinson), The Keep (Michael Mann), Murder by Decree (Bob Clark).

The previous transfer was derived from an IP/IN source as well. It was at the encoding stage that someone made the lame decision to encode the film interlaced. Either before they received it or at the final BD encode.

I just hope the new encode does not suffer under so much material being crammed onto one disc. At least the previous release had lossless audio. Something that should be a standard at this point in time, is still left off quite a few of their releases.

However, shouldn't this mean that this new edition should be rated R because of it containing an R rated version of the film along with it?

EDIT: Also, about the 4K remaster, from the same post-
I guess they couldn't make the effort to try to locate the Japanese laserdisc?

All three Japanese Laserdisc releases are the cut version. I was told the 1985 release was uncut years ago, but that turned out to be incorrect.

What would be nice is the 2.0 PCM Stereo track from 1991 LD release.

That's a shame. I guess no one has asked Russel Mulcahy if he might have (or know where to find) the cut bits?

From what I recall of my interview with Mulcahy, he doesn't, and he's also under the belief that the Japanese laserdisc was uncut...

Umbrella said, back when the previous DVD was released, that they'd done a very thorough search for the missing footage, and were satisfied that it doesn't exist anymore -- unless a copy somehow shows up somewhere completely unexpected, like.an undocumented collector. But they made their search pretty public.

Just a thought-
With this new edition containing the R-rated version, doesn't this mean that this edition (as a whole) has to be rated R? Just asking, in case Umbrella finds out the hard way.
Criterion is nice,
Arrow is too.
Mention Echo Bridge,
Well, no one will miss you.

Ratings on Australia and NZ are based on the entire contents of the disc. There's already been examples of ratings going up based solely on the extras (I Am Legend and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword spring to mind here) so yeah, I'd say this version will have an R rating.

Can't wait to get this. I just wished they got Dean Semler to do a commentary track. Hopefully he is one of the crew interviewed.

I own their previous edition and it's rated M for "moderate violence"...
