Default SUPER METROID Discussion Thread...

OK, you guys; I know this game's 16 years old, but I still love it to this day. I actually bought the cartridge of it a few days ago, for $20 at a retro-themed game store. It took a lot of cleaning (both inside and out), but now I think it looks pretty good...

I did a complete run-through shortly after I got it, and was amazed how much I'd remembered about it. It took about 4 hours, all told, to beat all the bosses and face Mother Brain. I didn't get all the power-ups, but all the major ones wound up in my arsenal. I also took a few shortcuts through areas like Brinstar, to shave some time off my final in-game completion (which now sits at 2:47).

So, I guess this is the place to share your thoughts, memories, and current opinions about this game. Let's hear it!

One of my all time favorite games. I really need to learn up to figure out how to play it on my iMac as I don't have an SNES anymore.

I absolutel love the music, atmosphere, gameplay, everything about it!

Nope.
[Show spoiler]End of the game, you win and during the celebration, "he" pulls off his helmet and reveals her womanly head of flowing hair.

Yep, and if you beat the game in less than 3 "gameplay hours", Samus' full armor disappears, showing her in a black leotard. She then jumps straight up, comes down in armored mode, and fires at the screen.

There's a couple hacks of this game. I've been curious to play some of the more creative ones, but the only one that even works for me so far is nothing but a giant pit. Even wall hopping my way up didn't get me out.

What point are you stuck at? Maybe I can help lead you out of it.

I loved this game. I still remember a somewhat tricky part where you had to go straight up a wall by repeatedly jumping from side to side. I wouldn't mind playing this again.

Excellent game Easily one of the best games of the SNES, and the best of the Metroid series. Love the gameplay, the music, the graphics. I remember my brother getting it for his birthday, which is 5 days before Christmas. We beat it before Christmas, and were amazed by it. Never have done a 'speed run' before as I have always like to take my time and explore. I think I had a log where I had all of the power ups at one point.

I need to download this for the Wii now

I have been a fan of the entire metroid series since the beginning. I loved this one, still my favorite our of all of them. However, I still need to purchase the PRIME 3 pack for the Wii and play those (I've only played one of them so far). I've downloaded Metroid and Super Metroid on my Wii.

If you get the original, after you have beaten it the 3rd time you play as Samus without the suit (coined Zero Suit Samus in Super Smash Brothers). The original is a little tougher unless you look online for the maps, because there is no map to look at or inventory menu.

Anyways...looking forward to more Metroid Titles in the future.

That's moderately disturbing...

Just hit a new personal time record for finishing the game - 1:18. I don't think I've ever hit the 100% mark on items, though.

I didn't know you could beat it in an hour, will have to see how long it takes me to do it whenever I get around to getting a Wii.

There's a route through Norfair that allows you to get the Speed Booster, Wave Beam, Power Bombs, Grappling Hook, and Ice Beam - in that order. When done right, it cuts about 30 minutes off that section of the game. The biggest challenge is you have to be good at Wall Jumping to pull a few of the shortcuts off.

Also, you can save more time by using the Speed Booster to collect the Missile upgrade near the Wrecked Ship area, instead of waiting for those pesky green hover platforms. Additionally, you can get to Miridia from the Wrecked Ship, and collect the Plasma Beam in short time, which saves some backtracking there as well.
