That second set is why I didn't mention it- $700 for half an anime is too much for me and almost anyone.

Yeah, I didn't realize the second BD-Box was OOP and going for scalper prices until fairly recently.

Concerning the Japanese DVDs/LDs, I actually haven't seen them to know what the source looks like, so I wouldn't be much help. Sorry! The only Japanese release of the series I've watched has been the BDs. However, I don't think any extensive remastering was completed until the BDs were released (don't quote me on that, though), so I assume the JP DVDs utilized the same source Viz used. It gets the job done, but it's nothing to write home about. Granted, I realize this doesn't answer your question about which format looks better...
