Default Only DTS?

I've been picking up all of the Godzilla BR releases over the past couple months. I must confess to saving Godzilla 98 for last as I'd never seen it and expectations were low. Ended up enjoying the movie quite a bit, sure it's got major faults, but it was fun.

This was my first 4k purchase, so I was looking forward to seeing what it had to offer. Obviously the picture looked great. The audio sounds fine, but has me puzzled. Everything I've read indicates this release has DTS-HD MA 5.1, but my receiver is showing regular DTS. Anyone else notice this?

I played it on a PS4 with a Sony STR-DN840 decoding. That's a 2013 7.2 receiver with the latest firmware installed. It's always accurately displayed the source info regardless of the format.

In my honest opinion, the Godzilla 1998 film is better than the new Godzilla 2014 film

Just ordered the Mastered in 4k release.

Hey guys - glad I found this thread. Have a question for everyone re: the regular Blu-ray (2009) vs. the Blu 4K (2013) release of the Godzilla '98 film:

I am thinking about getting the 4K release, but my set is only HD (not 4K), and I'm not sure how much difference there will be. That being said, I'm thinking that the 2013 4K Blu will still look better than the 2009 Blu, even if my set is non-4K HD....Any feedback on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

In any case, this is a great film - it's actually my favorite Godzilla film; I like the story & the ending, the effects, and the sleek-lizard like look of Godzilla, as well as the baby lizards (though I still haven't seen the 2014 version, I don't like the way the Godzilla looks in that movie - more like a snapping turtle...)

Definitely go with the 4K version. I have it and it looks spectacular on my Samsung 55" (regular HD).

I will ignore your last paragraph and answer, anyway.

It's still a Blu-ray, and it's still 1920x1024, no higher, so you aren't missing anything by not having a 4K TV.

Read the messages to find out of this is enough of an improvement over the previous release. In general, a new master is going to be better than the old one because why bother, otherwise? They are using newer technology to clean up the movie, and a new 4K scan is going to have more data for them to work with.

I know this message is old, but nobody answer it:

Sometimes the lossless audio isn't the default. Did you check the other audio choices to see if one of them is the HD MA?

Excellent - Thanks very much for taking the time to respond, everyone. I recently re-watched my Godzilla '98 regular DVD (for the first time on my HD set) & was appalled at how bad the PQ looked; the color is washed out & looks terrible...I've really been spoiled by Blu

You can compare both the Blu-Ray editions here - http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...hd_multiID=283

The 2009 Blu-Ray looks good, but the MI4K 2013 Blu-Ray looks better. Both of them are nice upgrades over the DVD which you can also compare on that site.

Couldn't resist

The best number is 73. Why? 73 is the 21st prime number. Its mirror, 37, is the 12th and its mirror, 21, is the product of multiplying 7 and 3... and in binary 73 is a palindrome, 1001001, which backwards is 1001001.

Finally broke down and bought this on sale from Zavvi, the remastered in 4k steelbook. Worked out about the same or cheaper than the U.S. version.

Watching my 4k disc now. It's hilarious that the military is cheering and celebration during the underwater torpedo scene, when just 30 seconds earlier they blew up a submarine, killing hundreds of Navy seamen.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm reasonably sure I cycled through all audio options, it's been awhile... Starting to think it may just be my receiver. I've recently noticed Amazing Spiderman 2 displays regular DTS despite HD MA being selected. To my knowledge AS2 and Godzilla4k have been the only discs to do this, and they both sound great, so maybe it's just a display error... more of a curiosity than a problem really.

Got the Godzilla '98 4K Blu yesterday - haven't had a chance to watch the whole film, but have seen bits & pieces. And, I'm extremely impressed by the PQ - amazing. Glad I paid several more dollars to get the 4K release over the 2009 Blu release. As I've mentioned before, this is my favorite Godzilla film (haven't seen the 2014 version yet, but know I won't like it as much since I don't like the snapping-turtle appearance of Godzilla in that film).

At some point down the road, I'll probably end up getting a 4K HD set (not anytime soon), and I'm sure the film will look even bette on a 4K set.

Thanks again to everyone who recommended I get this 4K version. As I've probably said before, this site is the de-facto "Consumer reports for Blu-rays".

Re: the film itself, it's funny to note that the Mayor & his assistant?! bear an obvious resemblance to the late film critics Siskel & Ebert, and even bicker like those two used to when discussing films..

It's also interesting that, like a lot of monster/alien attack films I've seen, the actors/actresses in the main roles are almost incidental...specifically in the case of Godzilla '98, I initially didn't like that M. Broderick was playing a dramatic role in this film (since I associated him with more comedic roles like F.B.'s Day off). However, it didn't really matter who acted in the film, since the real star of the movie was the Godzilla creature itself....and his/her offspring (the little lizards)...

Unfortunately the nod to Siskel and Ebert didn't gain them any favorable reviews. I think Gene was very sick by that point. I think he already had a brain tumor removed.
4k... really? The law of diminishing returns is fully in sight.
