So sad to hear. I think the news hurts more because he was just recently in rehab, wasn't he? I guess I was hoping he was getting better, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Yeah, he went to rehab. Drugs are no joke. That's why these pop stars who try to make them look cool piss me off. My dad died of an overdose too.

Apparently he was found in his bathroom with the hypodermic needle still in his arm and some heroin nearby

the demons of drug abuse are many. This could have been me 15 years ago when I was into cocaine. Luckily I was young and relatively healthy enough that I never went quite too far but it was total luck of the draw for me. This is such sad news. One of the greatest actors of our time gone far, far too soon.
My Set-Up: JVC DLA-RS400u 4K eshift, 158" 2:25.1 Elite Anamorphic Screen and 7.1 Earthquake surround sound Complete with Onkyo TX-NR828 and Outlaw Amp and Sony 4K upscaling BDP

I am sorry for you loss. I completely agree about the aspect of the people that try to make them look cool.

I hate to see anyone with their life completely wasted to drugs.

The problem is that often the greatest actors have mental problems and are given the worst outlet...which is the pot of money to go with it.

I feel like I have been punched in the stomach over a complete and utter stranger.

He had me from Scent of a Woman and even in When A Man Loves a Woman. A small part, but you could never look away from him. I recently watched the Master and I just found myself floored again. Punch Drunk Love, Hard Eight...hell even Doubt was on tv the other day and I just had to watch.

When I saw Catching Fire I was shocked at his weight gain. Not because he was fat, but because he looked sick. I knew in my heart that there was something not right. Others saw it as exposure to a new audience, I looked at it as a performance that was so obviously "phoned in".

A horrible waste.

Watch him in Almost Famous. He had the flu the entire time and was still awesome!

I gotta admit; I can't believe he was only 46.
Looked waaaay older. Look at my avatar. I'm 40 there and don't look like he's in my age range....
Did he look older cuz of the drugs? Body type?

.

The news made me so sad earlier. I had always loved him as an actor and he was honestly one of my favorites. I was really, really, REALLY hoping he'd stick with rehab, but alas, he didn't. Reason I liked him so much was because I could relate myself to him, as I am also a recovering addict (19 months sober). But regardless, I'll always think fondly of him. He was one hell of an actor.

Finally picked up this Blu-ray, I couldn't believe I didn't buy it sooner, the picture is outstanding!
"She came along the alley and up the back steps the way she always used to. Doc hadn't seen her for over a year. Nobody had. Back then it was always sandals, bottom half of a flower-print bikini, faded Country Joe & the Fish t-shirt. Tonight she was all in flatland gear, hair a lot shorter than he remembered, looking just like she swore she'd never look."

Is it better than TDKR's 65mm scenes (not just IMAX)?

It's unbelievably good, I haven't watched my copy of TDKR in a long time, but I definitely think this transfer is one of the best of the Blu-ray format.

Just re-watched The Master on Blu. Wow - amazing film, and beautiful print. I completely agree this is one of the better Blu's I've seen - incredible PQ, color, etc.

The film is extremely disturbing & insightful in capturing how cults form & how they can really brainwash their followers. The Quell character (JP) was so taken in by Lancaster Dodd (PSH), that he was willing to fight others on Dodd's behalf - despite not even believing what Dodd was preaching to any great extent. It's obvious that these cults prey on people who are drifters/rootless & looking for a sense of belonging. Quite scary, actually. Though this film is set in the 1950's, you can easily see these types of things happening today - to a much greater & far more dangerous extent.

My favorite scene in the movie is towards the end,
[Show spoiler]after Dodd rejects Quell in England, Quell is walking away alone down that road filled with fallen leaves. Very powerful scene, since it shows that Quell has finally broken free from Dodd's influence - even though Dodd actually was the one to turn him away.

Canada $3 @ Dollarama

The Master "Special Edition" can be found on Blu Ray at Dollarama in Canada for $3. I live in small city Alberta which has 2 Dollarama and each store has(had) 2+ copies. Exact eOne version reviewed here on bluray.com. Thought I'd help save my fellow movie collectors save a few $$ on this good BD.
