Default Region B players for the U.S.A.

Does anyone in the states have recommendations for a dedicated region B player or region free player for use in region A? I'm tired of missing out on titles or worrying about the region coding but I'm worried about the reliability of some of the advertised players. I'd appreciate any input from someone in region A with experience with such players.

I've had the Sony BDP-S6500 3D, hardware-modified, multi-region player for about a year now. Works like a charm. Got it from 220 Electronics: http://www.220-electronics.com/regio...ay-player.html

Thanks for the reply! I was afraid nobody looked at this forum anymore.

I notice that is a 4k player, is a 4k tv required even for non-4k media?

No, it's a regular ol' 1080p player. The specs say it will upscale the picture from 2k to 4k, for whatever that's worth. I have a Sony 1080p tv, so I doubt I'm benefitting from this upscaling feature. I'm by no means a technical expert, but I'm guessing a 4K tv would see the benefits of this feature.

Hi Damon, I recently bought the modified Sony BDP-S5500 through Amazon. I absolutely love it! You can switch regions very easily, and it works like a charm, couldn't be happier with it.

I see that's the same as kurosawa's minus the 4k. So two plugs for the Sony so far, thanks for replying. I thought 220 was cheaper than Amazon but you have to pay extra to make it region-free so it ends up being the same.

Add $40 for the region free Blu Ray ability on that.

A couple of codes that might work.

74195 - 5%
BLU10OFF - 10% got this one to work on a region free Sony BDP-S6500, wouldn't work on the LG you listed.

Could you explain what this means? Sorry if I'm slow, but if I need to use codes on these players, that would color my decision.

These would be discounts codes you would apply in the shopping cart at 220-electronics

Just a funny note. I finally pulled the trigger and got the sony 5500 which looked remarkably like those little $30 DVD players. Set it up and put a movie in and sat on the couch. Some previews started to play so without looking, I point the remote behind me and hit the page forward button. A few seconds later I'm listening to two soundtracks. Turns out the remote works on the blu-ray player I already had as well. So it looks like I going to have to find a way to separate them.

I don't have a region B disc yet to check out but there are some in the mail.

I'm thinking of getting this one for $159 to watch Region B 3ds. Any thoughts? Should work, right?

After digging in further I see the LG would work as well as the sony. The Sony is $30 more. Is there anything I would miss getting the cheaper one? I already have a great Oppo player for everything else.

Edit, I went with the Sony. FIgure I need something that will last a long time.

Is there a reason you want a separate player rather than getting the $50-70 OPPO region free module?

Otherwise I'd lean toward the Sony over LG

Sony order cancelled in time. I have not heard of the module. Can you give me more details?

I don't think I want to mess with it as to not break anything on the expensive oppo, or not have the latest firmware from oppo. But there is no rush for me to order a player, I will study it over the weekend.

A bit late, but with the plug in module is pretty hard to mess anything up -- literally plug it into the RS port and USB on teh back of the unit so you don't even have to open the unit.

Keeping the firmware UTD has never caused a problem with this module over several years.

That is what I ended up buying. I haven't plugged it in yet. I'm waiting for the eventuality that I get a region B blu-ray.

Most likely that will be Valerian. but still hoping it comes out region free.
