I'll be getting this for Christmas.

Does the 8 film set currently being offered for $44.99 have just the old single discs of the earlier films with the inferior audio, or the movie discs from these Ultimate Editions with the superior audio?

AGAIN. The audio is not inferior. It's PCM.

Guess what DTS-MA is? Compressed PCM (so is TrueHD, except for that it's a straight compression, DTS-MA encodes it as lossy and then adds back the discarded audio information).

16 vs 24 bit? Those tracks were mastered in 2001 & 2002. No movie soundtracks were 24 bit at that time. 24-bit encodes of films from that era would be padded zeros from the bits 17-24.

Listen, I'm no audio expert, I just am going off the reviews here and regardless of the format of the audio tracks, apparently the Ultimate Editions have slightly superior audio. I didn't mean inferior as "bad," just lesser than the newer tracks.

Sorry, but this isn't the case. Show me where you found this information. I don't think that's accurate at all. As long as the audio was properly handled by sound engineers/technicians, most audio is stored in 24 bit as a sort of mandatory thing from the engineers. No early Blu-ray releases had 24 bit audio, so I think it has more to do with that than anything. If WB wanted to, they could reissue all old releases with new 24 bit audio and it wouldn't just be padding if done correctly.

Again, not in 2001-2002: for FILM.

It wasn't until the mid 2000s where 24-bit mastering for films became commonplace, and even then 16-bit recordings and other parts of the audio chain were resolution limited.

Unless they're volume matching it's going to sound slightly different.
