Default To Run Audyssey EQ XT or Not.....that is the question.

I like how it EQ XT does its thing...however what it does do is also blow subwoofers...after much tweaking even with it EQ'd by Audyssey...the sub is being put at risk. I like how it picks up the rears on lower volumes...eq's the speakers and such...but I can't see running it anymore. I was watching MI-Ghost Protocol today and I heard this super loud pop...it was the sub....even after much reading....reading about how all but XT32 boost the low frenquecies a +20db. I have minused off the LFE track according to Audyssey a -10db....plus then i took the sub gain on the receiver and minus'd off another 6db. gain on sub is 10 oclock. which on most purposes is ok. even at 9 oclock it still does this and the amp is completely off by 8:30ish gain wise. so 9 isn't giving it alot. and minus -16db the sub sees and at a volume of -23db....i thought it blew my sub. had to take out the sub just to inspect it to see if there was any damage. its not reference volume....but loud enough for me. with EQ XT off no issues and its like the sub isn't playing at that point.

trying to balance the speakers now with audyssey is a PITA. i liked the way it sounded but i've blown my sub once. its not gonna happen again. any suggestions?

current LFE returned to 0db....-6.5 sub trim on receiver. 10 oclock gain on amp. doesn't seem to affect the sub...but the rest is kind of flat. doesn't have that extra ummmmph that audyssey gave.

Ive only got the basic audigy.

It beeps through the speakers one at a time. Can you turn your subs off or stupid low and just audigy the rest?
After that do the subs manually.

I also own an eD subwoofer and a receiver with XT and I can tell you that it's the eD subwoofer, because the amplifiers don't use a subsonic filter. I have used other subs with this receiver and they don't have a problem with Audyssey. I have tried F-Mod's with them and all they do is weaken the output. If you like your subwoofer, the only thing i can recommend, is to disable Audyssey. I like my sub, but if I would have known about this issue I would have went with SVS or another Internet Direct sub. So there really isn't anything you can do, except disable Audyssey.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but when I upgraded to the 809 I ran Audyssey. I have had an ED A2-300 for going on 2 years. No blown amps so far (knock on wood ) I always thought it was BS that ED came up with to explain their quality control issues by blaming other manufacturers. I am leery of future purchases with them though.

Are there other subs having consistent issues with Audyssey EQ besides eD subs? Or is this a phenomenon new to the EQ XT and XT32?

I was playing with the idea of trying an AVR with a more powerful EQ, but I don't want to risk my sub. On the other hand, I have not read about this issue with other manufacturers. Is it really the lack of a subsonic filter in their amps (can someone link me this info)?

I have only read about this occurring with eD. I would also like to know where it says there's no subsonic filter. I assumed they did and haven't found anything to the contrary. Unless you mean this http://forum.edesignaudio.com/showth...e4e771d2c&

It sounds like they claim Audyssey is defeating the subsonic filter.

I remember reading something on hometheatershack.com, where a guy stated that eD doesn't put a limiter or subsonic filter in their subs until you get up to the A7 series. If you look at the pdf file for the manual on the A2,A3, and A5 subs, it states in there that they recommend not using Audyssey because it doesn't know what the natural roll off of the amplifier is and that it boosts frequencies below its intended range. Before this I had two Klipsch Sub-12's, and never did they bottom out due to Audyssey. When I bought the two A2-300's, I had problems specifically with The Incredible Hulk during the campus scene. So I turned Audyssey off and the problem went away, but also realize that I listen at the most -20db away from reference level. To me Audyssey is more important than a $400 dollar subwoofer that has those limitations. So when I get the money I will probably get either the SVS PB-12NSD or one of the Outlaw Audio subs.

You may want to check out the thread I posted. It has a few work arounds that allow the use of Audyssey with limited equalization to the sub.
