Isn't it funny how Split-Face is now Two-Face, thanks to the 2011 prequel telling how that happened?
Pffffff! Prequels; telling us what to think instead of using our own head! Sounds like the Affordable Care Act.

.
Good to see others like yourself notice the difference in brightness/contrast as well. However another thing I find strange is that HD clips on YouTube from The Thing have the same apprant brightness/contrast levels as the preview clips displayed on the Blu-Ray main menu. Check out these short videos of scenes from the film.

Again the lighting is much much brighter then when watching the actual film on Blu-Ray just like with the main menu preview clips. You can see a lot more of whats going on with the special effects with the increased brightness/contrast but it also detracts a lot from the look and impact as well. I wonder why this is?

and yeah I had envisioned something much different for the origins of split-face/two-face.

It's because the original split-face looks exactly like that: a split, not a joining. The two faces look like taffy being pulled apart, almost like a human kept trying to pull himself away from what was absorbing him. One face appears to be in complete terror for its life, the other has a wild animalistic look that communicates a different kind of fear: I need to finish this quickly!
I mostly come out at night...mostly.

Look out! I wrote that months ago... a few pages back... and got attacked right in here.

And just to back you up for all that disagree; in 1981, when Rob Bottin was designing the creatures for the thing, do you really think when he was making the mold for the fabrication of that particular thing he thought, "Hmmmm I'll make this be two guys combining. But I'll do it so subtle that no one knows."???!!!

No!

He molded a slimey, stretching guy screaming, thought it looked cool, but not cool enough, so took it a step further and had the face slide at the center axis... creating Split Face, not Two Faces Combine Face!
