Thanks man. I always liked the redish tone for walls in a theater room.
I played with tan but it just wasn't dark enough for me with the lighting.

Two tone is nice having a dark ceiling minimizes the reflection of light from the screen. Plus black paint tends to be cheaper than colored paint in the big box stores since they don't sell much of it.

Well cleaned up the room.
I didn't do any painting but I played around with the led light strips this is what I ended up with...

So it fades different colors and lights up the perimeter of the screen.

Ok The latest. Carpet is down and the final painting is done.
The black outlest and switches are in. I just have a few plate covers left to do and install material for the screen and put in the equipment.

Thanks.
I guess the next big purchase will be actual dedicated home theater chairs. Right now the cheap chairs will do but I want some decent chairs down the road.

I think in total I am about $5-6000 into this build not too bad I guess.

Default Question for anybody really...

I'm very curious about this because I may be in the market for my own home in the future.

What does a dedicated home theater do to the value of a house?

Is it a selling bonus...or....what do you homeowners think?

Thanks folks.

It would depend on the level of the home theatre. I'd imagine for every person that sees themselves sitting down and watching a movie in their own private theatre others will just see the expense of removing all the left over wiring (if the current home-owner takes the guts out of it) and remodelling the room.

It would depend on the house too, if it's a modest home then it would be a detraction if it's taking up a bedroom or dining room then it will hurt the seller. If it's a bigger home with plenty of family rooms and is a true addition then I guess it will be seen as a plus. If it's a multi-function room in the basement it might not make any difference.

Well most real estate opinions are that custom rooms like "home theaters" are out. However I think media rooms or Multiple use rooms are a great addition to any home.
Most home shoppers usually have families and entertainment of their kids is key in the purchase.
I think a room for family time is in desire in my opinion.

If we compare two homes and assume all things are equal. Both homes have the same floor plan, same lot size, same upgrades to the kitchen's and bathrooms, age of the roof and furnace and windows are all the same, both are on the same street both have finished basements.

In one home there is a bedroom in the basement and in the other rather than the bedroom they've put a theatre. Which home is worth more/less?

I'd assume to the family who wants to put an in-law or older kid in the basement with their own private living space the house that has made that into a bedroom will sell before the house that has turned that space into a theatre. Will it sell for more than the house with the theatre? Less?

I can also tell you I'm in this exact situation. I live in a 'cookie cutter' neighborhood where I live in the most popular model, quite literally I'd say 1 in every 3 houses is identical to mine. Most have finished basements with a bedroom, we chose to turn the bedroom in our basement into a dedicated theatre room. At best I'd say we will sell our house for the same as the ones with a bedroom at worst I'd guess it may take a little longer to sell ours because I think people are looking for extra bedrooms more than they are looking for dedicated theatres.

Thank you both. Makes total sense that way.

I think it would be alot easier for a buyer to turn a theater back into a bedroom than the other way around anyway.

Thanks guys.

Well I just sold my house, and the basement was a large part of the sale. The couple LOVED the space and requested almost everything I had installed/used.

I've heard it can go both ways depending on the setup and how much space in general you have in your home. I wouldn't say that he "adds" value, it just makes it look better then other homes to the eyes of the end user.

Thanks guys. I have a pretty busy work schedule so it's been hard to watch movies lately.

I think you can pickup a older jvc dla-x3 for about $2000. I bought mine new so I paid $3700 for it back in the day.
