Thank you! That explains it.

Matt Smith Confirms Himself for Series 8 2014

http://doctorwhotv.co.uk/matt-smith-...2014-49463.htm

Matt Smith has confirmed that he will continue to play the Eleventh Doctor in Series 8.

In an interview from Saturday’s edition of The Sun’s TV Magazine, Smith says: “I’m on a break for a couple of months while I’m in Detroit making How To Catch A Monster.”

“We come back and shoot the Christmas special over the summer, then we go on to the next series, which will either start filming at the end of this year or at the start of 2014.”

So there you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth!

Interestingly, back in March The Sun claimed he was leaving at Christmas.

Quite odd they will be keeping Matt Smith as The Doctor for another season. This will put him ahead of Tenant for longevity.

But I guess the show is so popular now they don't want to waste another regeneration.

It's not odd really at all, it just means they have another storyline set up for this Doctor. It's good to see that Smith is going another season longer than Tennant, but I have a feeling Series 8 will be his last, and it sounds like it may be Moffat's as well. I look forward to seeing how they close out their era, and the change it'll bring with new people in front of the cameras and behind the scenes.

It's hard for me to speculate since I'm so new to Who but I look forward to hearing thoughts on who he might be.
I have been a long time who watcher from back in the 80's, but I don't think it makes a big difference.

We had something like

Clara: who is that?
Dr: he is me
Clara: I saw all of your incarnations but I did not see him
Dr: I said he is me, not the Doctor

So I don't think he is a future incarnation and I don't think he is the real 9th doctor as some say, because then he would be the doctor even if he would have done it under a different name at least as far as his time is concerned.

I have four thoughts

1) this is the "doctor" from an alternate dimension or something like that, but then why would there just be one?

2) the intelligence screwed up the doctors life, what if this incarnation existed in that time lines before Clara "fixed" it and wiped him out of existence? but if that is the case how did the doctor recognize him?

3) what if he was one of the incarnations but one that was there before the intelligence and Clara but that got wiped out with their meddling?

4) This is out there but we know that Gallifreyans where not always time lords. Regeneration and time travel came through technology. And they took up the moniker of Time Lords once they got a handle on all that. If this was the first/mortal none time traveling version of him then it could make sense that she did not see him in the doctors "time rift" since he would not have been affecting time.

The real ninth Doctor? I think that would be a difficult one to sell to the audience, regular viewers know that Ecclestone is the ninth. An inbetween incarnation? I do think he is related to the Time War. That helps to explain why only Doctors 10 &11 are in the special, the John Hurt Doctor is their past, they know who he is and perhaps the events in this episode have freed him, so he needs to be stopped?

I wonder if he started the Time War? Is that the secret and the shame? He thought it was for the greater good but actually he almost wiped out his own people.
